Are you saying that I'm shallow for thinking that a 20 year-old should be working on developing his intellect and academic background instead of focusing on luxury cars? Or, are you saying I'm shallow for thinking that the very same 20 year-old should be riding a bicycle around campus instead of driving a luxury car?
Developmentally speaking, I think most people over the age of 30 would agree that you are probably missing out on some very valuable growth experiences if at the very young age of 20 you are working for your money and buying luxury cars. Money and cars are not the most important things. As I said before, I believe there is plenty of time for all that later.
This is just my opinion. You don't have to agree or like what I'm saying.

Gentlemen (and ladies, to be safe
)...
... lets not playa hate. If the fellow enjoys driving his ride than that's cool. In fact, I commend him for "bustin' his a$$" (read: having drive and ambition) so that he could enjoy his toys early (ie.: probably doesn't have to justify how he spends his hard earned cash to a significant other, nor compromise about it either.)
I understand where he's coming from! I got a DEP w/ Navi parked outside and kick a$$ THX/DTS-ES 8 speaker home theater system (with the 53' 16:9 HDTV on the way...) in the crib that says so.
When I was at home with my parents there was no way electronics or cars were anywhere near new!
evolaerok -- I think what some of these cats are eluding to is something I myself went through. I had to deal with a car payment while attending college. I had to pass on a few great "intellectually" rewarding internships (read: some of these things were in other countries, or extremely high tech, yet government type work (low pay), etc.) and op for those that paid the most or just flat out work to handle the payments. Working back then meant sacrificing study and relaxation time and vacation time.
All things being equal, although it was nice to have a car to get to work while in school, I was working to pay for the car.
I got through it though and now I'm having a blast. So keep it movin' brother!!
BTW, I'm 25. I'll be 26 on the 7th.
Hey man, great choice on cars!!

just because they are not in college and instaed working doesn't mean that they are concerned only with nice cars and money...
some people's circumstances force them to work and make money rather than go to school and have fun...
im 20 have a full-time job, making good money and go to night school..does that make it wrong for me to have a luxury car?
And not everyone is the same..you cannot make comparisons on things that shouldn't even be compared.
I seen a lot of flaky 30 year olds, who don't have a clue of what they want or need to do in life.
I've seen a lot of young people who have a steady grasp on their life, and I think that's commendable. It's wrong to discriminate people because of their age.
How do you one know all young people are missing out on something?
im 20, and love my life. I don't need to go to college parties and get drunk and high to have fun...
Hehe,
When I was 20 I was driving a 16 year old Dodge Dart. For it's time it was a classic slant six engine. No car will move me quite like that one did since my dad hired a local unemployed mechanic and we rebuilt the engine in our own garage.
It's all relative I suppose, compared to my friends at the time who didn't have cars, I was the brat

When I was 20 I had a '80 white 320i(s) with the black recaro interior a 5spd stick a sunroof and bbs rim.. and a kickin' system.
T'was an old car but a classic and pretty mint. Too mint (espically with it's rebuilt head). I used to get pulled over all the time!
So, I sold it to a friend of mine and he loved it so much he rapped the darn thing a round a tree while driving really hard.
..se la vi...

Yup yup... You can be house poor, car poor, home theater poor, beer poor, paying for groceries on a credit card poor... it's all the same. You allocate your money towards whatever you think you should spend it on. A guy that lives down the street from me lives in a single story 1700 sq. ft. house but has 2 bimmers in his garage (3 & 5 series). Without a doubt, his car payments exceed his house payments. You know what though, it's his choice & his life and I couldn't care less...

wow
If you got a fat ride and you are making massive payments then you should refigure if u can afford the lux car.
My simple life formula is you should make 2x to 3x the value of your car per year at least. So if u got a 35k ride u should make 70k - 105k. take home cash
I feel bad for people when it takes 2 years of their salary just to take home enough money to drive. Plus the insurance. There is so much you are missing out on in life if you strap yourself so much with payments.
I guess it depends on how much your car matters to you in life.
Just my opinion
I hope i don't step on anyones toes by saying this.
Doc

No flameouts from over here...
Your calculations are about right for what makes a sensible budget for owning a car of this cost. It's probably the key reason I waited a couple of years after graduating before jumping into the car payment world (again...
). At least this time, I'm not strapped.
Amen to that...

Hey guys,
Please think about what I'm about to write without rushing to "flame" me. To me, you're all stating the obvious when you comment that everyone should spend their money on whatever they choose. I love living in a free country too.
I gave my opinion on this thread in terms of how I think a 20 year-old can best spend his or her youth, and some of you take exception with my point of view.
Look, I don't think you're wrong for wanting nice things. Paradoxically, you're surrounded by images of athletes and members of music acts (I can't bring myself to describing most of today's performers as musicians.. i.e. Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock, Brittany Spears & Puff Daddy) who flaunt wealth and preach the importance of "benjamins & bimmers". If anything, I blame your parents for not instilling you with enough of the values that would make you realize that you should be building your mind and intellect at your age, NOT your bank accounts (or debt, for that matter). Yes I said it, you guys may be victims of your upbringing and your parents failure to set a good example. Lots of parents SCREW UP, mine were far from perfect either.
OR, I may be wrong. It may be that each of you actually has the wisdom that I thought I had when I was 20-24 years old. Or maybe you think you know it all, and have got it all figured out already. It also may be that in 10-15 years you'll look back and realize "tea elle" made some sense. One day you may look back and see that all the time and money you devoted to your image during your teens and early twenties was a WASTE. Nobody is going to care what kind of car your drove ten years from now.
Older people usually agree that youth is truly wasted on the young. If the dead could talk, they would say that life is wasted on the living. I gotta go back to work now.
If you must flame, then flame.
