Angry Just over a week...advice please

Hey all,

Got my '02 TL-S just over a week ago and today I had an unfortunate instance with a blown out truck tire (big sigh ). I'm attached some pics of the poor girl. Can anybody give me an idea of what I can expect to spend to get this fixed? The damage did not exceed the bumper, so at worst I should only have to replace that and the fogs. Also, how long do repairs usually take for something like this? Unfortunately, I'm not experienced enough to replace it myself, and I don't want to drive around with a bungie cord attached to my baby for any longer than I absolutely have to... (or is there a nicer-looking temporary fix?)

Thanks all!
Joe

On with the pics:

When my old 99TL bumper cracked from a minor fender bender it cost a little over 300 to get the bumper cover replaced. There was no other damage.

Thus they ordered a new bumper painted it and put it on. So including the labor it was a little over 300.

I did not have fog lights so I would expect it to be a little more for you to get those fogs replaced as well.

Goodluck!

When my 03 Accord got bumped in the parking lot and got a 3" deep scratch on the bumper (it had 4000 miles) it was $1100 to fix and that included bumper replacement. The fog light assemblies themselves will be over $300 alone (together).

That damage exceeds $1000. It would have to.

A new painted bumper shouldn't be over $500-600 i believe. Fogs? Depends on what's broken... if it's just cracked, it should be relatively cheap to replace.

Keep the fogs and replace the lenses with Lexan inserts. You can find them on ebay for roughly $70. They are well worth the $$$ compared to replacement fog light enclosures which I think run around $200+ each.

If you do a search there are numerous posts on how to remove the front bumper and how to replace the fog light lenses.

http://www.abunchofcars.com/ - has a lot of good DIY's. He used to have a very informative DIY on removing the front bumper. If you e-mail him I'm sure he would hook you up.

This post gives details on removing the fog lights:

Review of Lexan lense replacements:

I have had the Lexan replacement inserts on my car for over a year with no issues.

You guys are forgetting that on a car that age, paint matching and blending is necessary or it will never look right - at least in my experience. Even my 03 Accord had to have paint matching and blending and it was 3 months old with 4000 miles.

It appears from the picture that there is more damage to the foglight housing than just the shattered glass lense. Those will likely have to be replaced entirely, and that alone will be close to $400, if not more.

Turn it in on your insurance. If you have any half-decent insurance company this will not raise your rates.

So are you going through insurance or are you trying to pay out of pocket? Sounds like you were driving behind a truck or something... or just ran over a tire, and your bumper got fucked. Seeing as it is not your fault, wouldnt it be best to go through insurance? This happened to a friend of mine, ran over a chunk of tire on the freeway... messed up his bumper pretty bad, went throgh insurance, and did not have his rates raised. I think he had state farm.

In Atlanta, that will cost you a minimum of $1,000 for the bumper cover, fogs, labor, and painting. Prices may be lower or higher where you are.

New fog lights will be probably around 400 installed.

New bumper cover, probably about 500 painted and installed, possibly more depending on the shop.

Assuming the damage stops there (and judging by the pictures, most likely), yeah, it will probably cost you around a grand or so if you took it to a shop.

Even if you did it yourself, I don't think you will save much, since there isn't much "labor" involved with these repairs. It's like 50% parts and 45% paint. Even at published book time, installation of the fog lights and the front bumper shouldn't exceed 2 hours, which is anywhere from like 100-250 bucks depending on the shop's labor rate.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I would go for insurance, but currently I have liability only (and I doubt that would cover it). I was waiting until after my wedding (in 18 days) to go to full coverage (for $$$ reasons). I'm pretty sure I'll have to pay out of pocket, but I really don't have the money right now due to the afore mentioned wedding. Hopefully soon after that I will be able to get it fixed.

The car isn't financed? In GA it is a law that you must have full coverage if there is a lien on the car. I figured it would be that way in all states to protect the bank.

Not in OH. My bank specifically said I am not required to have full coverage. I'm really wishing I went with it now, in retrospect... definitely would have been the cheaper option.

yeah i'm glad someone allready mentioned it but go with lexan lenses for the foglights. they're much cheaper and you're only going to have to replace the glass again later anyway.

you might be able to find a used bumper here in the black market or on ebay. but the painting and blending will be where the problems are (like the others mentioned). good luck!
