Just had a hit and run...

...with a damn raccoon

I was driving through some twistys and saw a raccoon just sitting there in the middle of the road as I was exiting the turn. There was no one coming the opposite direction so I was able to swerve to the left barely missing him. The very next turn I was exiting pretty fast and here comes another one.. This one was running from my right trying to cross and ran RIGHT in front of me. I swerved right as much as I could but clipped him with the bumper. Not much happened but scared the shit out of me.

damn animals.. haha Good thing it didn't damage your car

Hate when that happens though. Happened to me with my neighbors cat - luckily it was ok though cuz that thing is their "only child" as they say. lol

Ouch. Been there hit 3 or 4 or 5 or oh hell i quit counting after 300k on the TL. None have done any damage luckily. The ones that get stuck under the car and bounce and hit every thing under neath make you cringe the most.

I've done that before too. This one just bounced off the bumper to the left.

I don't swerve for animals, unless they're large enough to come over the hood. Otherwise I stay in my lane. Got a bunch of skwerls over the years.

Ah ah Kris, yes we have animals. Just saw some deer last week.

6MTUA5 - never had any repairs to speak of. I've even driven over a paint can at 40 miles/hour. Can shot up about 10 feet in the air after I was done with it.

My concern is while swerving I am more likely to hit someone then I am to avoid hitting an animal. How much more damage is it to swerve to avoid an animal only to hit something else, like a car, person or worse yet lose control of the vehicle.

I agree with you 100%, but that wasn't the case in either of the two very close encounters. There was not a car in sight when I saw either one. I know I said exiting pretty fast but these are some pretty hard turns so we're only talking 30-40 mph here. If it's between me/TL/someone else's safety vs the animal of course that animal is getting demolished. I had complete control of the car both times I swerved to avoid them and if I hadn't done what I did, I'd be looking at a lot more damage than you see.

I ran pass a squirrel once between my wheels. As I was right on top of him, I heard a loud "thump" underneath me. Guess he had one hell of a headache after that.
