Just got the new Sylvania Silverstars...

I'm new to this forum (just got my new '02 TL-S today!!) and I thought you guys might like to know that the new Silverstars are SWEET!! After reading lots of posts on this board over the last week I realized I'd need/want some new fogs right away. I picked up some Silverstars at my local Advance Auto Parts as soon as I left the dealership (paid around $26 each). I installed them shortly after and they are a HUGE improvement over the stock fogs. Having never used the CATZ or PIAA bulbs, I cannot say for certain that the Silverstars are "better", but they are a close enough match for me. After warming up they seem to match almost perfectly when viewed from 10-15 feet away. I'm sorry but I don't have any pics (no digital camera yet). Just thought you guys might be interested. Sorry for the long post.

Thats not a long post, there are some long winded people on this board *cough RoadRage cough* . Anyways, welcome to the boards and post pics as soon as you can. The SilverStars have been discussed but I think you're the first to have them.

Well, his post says that he bought them at a local Advance Auto Parts Store, so I'm assuming that's where he got them from. You can check their site for store locations. I don't see them listed on their site, so you may want to call your local store......

Welcome to the board and congrat's on the new ride!!!!

That's awesome about the new lights.....I've been trying to figure out what to get myself without spending a bundle - sounds like these might be an alternative.

Thanks for the post, put up some pics when you can, and enjoy your new baby!

I got them at a local Advance Auto Parts here in the Cleveland area. The bulbs weren't on the shelves yet, but they had them in a box behind the counter. The Sylvania rep I spoke with on Monday told me that all Auto Zone and Advance Auto stores had them in their warehouses and it would just be a matter of time before individual stores received them. I'm trying to find someone here at work with a digital camera so that I can take pics and post them for you guys.

It's super easy. You'll need a 10mm socket with extension (it has to be 7-8 inches long to reach the bolt). Get under the car and you'll see a square hole cut out of the bottom of the bumper that allows you to access the bolt securing the fog assembly. Loosen the bolt. From the front of the car, pull on the fog assembly while depressing the clip on the side of it (you'll have to reach your hand through the section on the bottom of the bumper). The assembly should pop right out. Unplug the connector from the bulb and rotate the bulb 1/4 turn couter-clockwise to remove it. That's it.

when compared to "poser" bulbs (u know the ultrawhite / superwhite/ platinum etc.. ) ... do these look like pure white or do they also have a "fake" look to them? i use sylvania cool blue right now and they're just a whiter lite.. no blue tint.. no pseudo- color mixed in ... so do these follow in the tradition and just provide "cleaner" white?

Congrats on the new ride jkozlow3 and I'm happy to hear that the silverstars are in now but I've been doing some research while just waiting on them! I've read that RAZO bulbs from JAPAN burn at 4100K while the silverstars burn at 4000K. I know our HID's are 4100K as well. HELP HELP, I don't know what to get now? They just came out w/ a new version of the RAZO's now called "Premium White Zero's" that now have a color temp of 4550K and they seem to be even bluer I guess the higher the color temp. the bluer the bulb? Don't we want the Whiter the bulb Can anyone help w/ suggestions cuz now I'm really confused on what to get

P.S. I'm obviously really anal about this but I don't want to buy 5 different bulbs at $50-60 just to try them out!

It's a 9006 bulb. Sylvania lists them as a 9006ST.

It should be a matter of personal preference.....a bulb w/ a higher color temp will produce a bluer light, assuming it's filled with Xenon. But that extra 550 K might cost you a lot more than the regular 4000K Silverstars. BTW, are all these K's degrees on the Kelvin scale?

The bulbs don't look fake. They are just a brighter, whiter, cleaner looking light. They are a close enough match for me. I should be able to post pics tonight.

After reading this thread, I went and bought them myself. They are installed and ready for the road. They arent Xenon material but they blow the stock lights out of the water. They arent blue. they are just a bright white. Looks real good. Thanks for the info.

Overall I'm not sure I'd buy the Silverstars. They're better than stocks, but I think a little bluer would be nice. Paid $53 w/tax at Advance.

Is there any consideration that needs to be given running with a hotter bulb? Any danger of melting any plastic down there?

4100K, 4500K, etc refers to color temperature, not actual temperature. As long as the bulb is 9006 with the correct wattage the housing should be fine.

Also, the color seems to match better after they warm up for a few minutes.

Have any one noticed a little piece of metal surrounding the bulb of the fog light? It is hold by a screwdriver inside.

Can we take that out so hte fog light will be brighter?

HEY jkozlow3 THE SILVERSTAR'S BRIGHTNESS IS REALLY GOOD BUT IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THEY ARE VERY BLUE? DO YOU KNOW IF THEY HAD THE 1157'S FOR THE FRONT TURN SIGNALS? I HAVE TO CLEAR THOSE AS WELL

No, they're not blue at all. They just produce a very clean, white light. While they don't match the HIDs perfectly (nothing shy of a true HID bulb will), they are significantly better than the stock fogs. I'm not sure if they're better than the popular CATZ bulbs(never tried the CATZ), but I'd imagine they're close.

As far as 1157s go, I have no idea. You might want to give Sylvania a call (1-800-347-3420).

Ditto here. I thought I was immune but you ba$tards are starting to cost me money!

They are a *very* white light that looks much better than stock and when warmed (doesn't take long) they are sufficiently close to the HIDs. Looking straight on they match identical. Off to the side (where you get more blue from the HIDs) you do notice a slight difference, but this is definitely how they should have come in the first place. BTW, the SilverStars are 60W (as opposed to the stock 51W) but I doubt the extra draw will be a problem on the wiring.

jkozlow3,

Thanks. The pictures really show the difference. Now I just have to find them in Raleigh. Autozone and Advance were both fully stocked with idiots on wednesday. I'll try again.
