Just got 2002 TL Press Kit - read on...(long)
I just got my press kit and here is some stuff that may or may not be known about our TL's:
1) The Type S has separate, spin-cast cylinder wall liners cast into the block during final manufacturing. These provide additional weight reduction over traditional cylinder walls and also provide added heat rejection to avoid knocking.
2) The Type S has a specially angled top piston ring to ensure sealing with the higher compression engine
3) The S has specially designed, race-bred intake valves
4) Type S camshafts have longer duration, valve overlap, and lift (exhaust valves)
5) Exhaust flow of the S is 30% better than TL. Special attention was made to get a "sporty" exhaust note yet subdued at crusing speeds.
6) Shifts in SS mode are firmer and 10% FASTER THAN AUTO MODE
7) Auto trans has a heat exchanger to aide warm up and keep temps moderate
8) The PCM limits rpm to 5000 in neutral or park
9) Here is a description of the Type S power steering: it uses a troque sensing rotary valve the varies the amount of assist according to steering input and the troque generated between the pavement and tire. It also varies assist based on engine speed.
10) Brakes: the pedal leverage ration has been revised to improve braking feel and there is a new pad material in the front with improved COF (coefficient of friction for you non-tech types). Shorter braking distances result.
11) Traction control operates below 18 mph
12) ABS. When braking in a straight line, the type S 4-channel ABS actually operates in 3-channel mode, same as TL. In corners, it switches to 4-channel mode.
13) The doors use laser welding to allow steels of different thicknesses to be used, allowing strength and reduced weight.
14) NVH. Improved insulation aterials added in 2002.
15) The TL is a midsize according to EPA. BMW and ES300 are compacts.
16) In test compariusons with the ES300, the TL's a/c cooled the front area 15% faster, the rear 30% faster.
17) The Marysville, OH plant can produce 1800 cars/day. Accords, CL's, and TL's are made on the same line.

This is some good information. I love to hear all the good points of my car. As for the production line, I hope when the TL-S is on the line the techs aren't rushed to finish. Attention to detail is the key...I am hoping.

Ditto, when I read that last line, I figured... maybe they should cut back (even though everyone says Acura can't keep up with the demand)...
In the long run, quality matters so that you keep the customers coming back and draw future customers in. Who cares if you can sell a couple of more cars now only to have them give you a bad name later and drive off customers?
