What ever jack you buy try to buy one with a 4-5" lifting pad and not the little cheap ones that have a 2" lifting pad.

Look at sears, they often have deals where they have jack stands thrown in for free with the jack. Jack stands arent that much any way, just get a good jack

Yes, don't cheap out because you will be UNDER the car. Sears has great products and fair prices.

Or get 2 chunks of wood to drive on first to get the car high enough to get your jack under the car

Kiran, is your jack low pro enough that you don't have to drive up on wood to jack your car up?

Be careful with some of the aluminum craftsman jacks. There have been a lot of complaints that the jack leaks and won't hold weight and even though it's a craftsman, its not warrantied.

I was also going to add to make sure you look at how low the jack is when it is all the way down. If you plan on lowering your car, you'll have to look into that, or you can do as fsttyms1 suggested with the wood. Usually a 2x4 will do the trick.

IMO, jack stands are all the same. Just check the weight rating on it. Our cars are about 3500 pounds which is just under 2 tons (1 ton = 2000 lbs, by US measurement anyways).
