Ive always wondered what this did...

Im sure this is a no brainer to most of you out there, but I am not very knowledgeable about cars, and i have always wondered what happens if you move your shift knob or whatever its called over to D5 to the left, and there is a plus above and a minus below which you can push to, what does it do?

It's a feature called sport shift, it basically lets you manually change gears. Once you put the shifter in there, look at your speedometer and it'll say what gear you're in, then you hit the shift up towards the + to go up a gear or down to - to go down a gear, you should try it and see how it feels

It will shift automatically for you between first and second though and vice versa. You have control after you're in 2nd gear.

As far as why you would use it....

...to prevent the computer from upshifting/downshifting for you (of course with exceptions). For example, in stop & go traffic, racing, inclines/declines, etc.

leave it alone= it will just encourage you to downshift into 3rd and 2nd at high rpm with no purpose = putting stress on the weak part of the car for no reason and trans cost 2500+$$ to rebuild, 4 grand for factory rebuilt

make sure you have the `recall installed` oil jet done aready
if not sure and dont know how to tell by looking at the top of trans- call 1 800 382 2238x5
everyone should register there as owner- they send out the recall notices and need owner address, there is a recall for airbag inflator for some of us now

the book says: stop and go traffic on freeway- pull shifter down 1 notch to D4- that keeps it from hunting for 5th gear/overdrive at 35-45, a major annoyance

Let it shift for you unless really bad slow stop and slow go- then put in D1 or SS and 1, pull slightly to the edge of lane so your not right behind a car spewing hot exhaust at you and let the rpm run at 2000-4000 as you drive,
the water pump spins faster with rpm to make up for lost cooling from 70 mph air to radiator
getting to the side of car ahead lets fresh air, hopefully cooler air into the rads-engine and ac

remember to put it back in D5 when road clears or you will use a few hundred extra rpm and more gas.... until you pick up a water bottle and notice the shift lever is out of its normal position--not that this ever happend to me.. again today

I keep mine in D4 all the time unless on the freeway. Once I merge from the on-ramp and hit 75 or so, I slide it to D5. If I get down below 60, I put it back in D4.

Try it out some time when entering a straight on-ramp, with a clear mile in front of you.

Directions:

Punch it.
The car will start off in first, and the LED1 will show in place of the D indicator.
The car will automatically shift into second.

Keep it punched. The car will be going really fast in second, and when the engine sounds like it is revving high,
bang the shifter towards the "+", and that will shift to third. The red LED will now say 3.
Keep it punched. You'll very quickly find yourself at full highway speeds, where you'll + to 4th.
At this point, I usually bang the shifter back to the right, into D.

Rarely do I us the function, but it is there if you need it. Better to have it and not need it, than not.
