Introduction and question

Hi all, first post but I have read quite a bit and appreciate all the knowledge on this board.

I recently purchased a 99 TL - P with 100k, it's in great shape, and I'm really enjoying it (I commute about 60 miles a day).

I am interested in putting some new headers on soon, as well as doing a few cosmetic things.

My question is this- my TL has the tan interior, and for some reason, the front half of all the speaker cover cloth is discolored almost black- I've noticed in other pictures I have seen of similar interiors that this seems to be common. Does anyone have any advice on how to either clean or replace the speaker cover cloth, or what exactly causes the discoloration?

The front half is where the speaker opening actually is, that's why it looks black or darker than the rest of the area.

Welcome! This is the forum to learn all about your TL!

And now to your question:

I recently bought a 99 TL and I noticed the same thing with the front speakers. But my impression is that it's not actually a discoloration. I think it's just the black color of the speaker itself that you're seeing through the speaker cover material.

But perhaps other forum members know more about this.

BTW, in future threads, put your actual question in your thread title. That will help you get more replies.

That's the speaker. Since it's concave, there is space between the than cloth and the dark black speaker cone. You could get even more technical, but it basically speaks for itself.

Thanks for all the responses, looking at it now it must be the speaker.

I'll post up some pics in a bit

I look forward to learning more on this forum, the mod section is great, I used the info in there to change my transmission fluid the other day (not a huge deal, but I generally haven't done my own maintenence).

Quick question, not trying to hijack the thread, since u got a 99, hows your tranny? and your engine itself? Just trying to look out for a fellow member..

If you dont know anything on the tranny situation, do a search "tranny failure". Hope fully you dont have to go through that.

I haven't noticed anything wrong with the tranny yet, I changed the fluid and hope that will help- it seems to be in great shape, but I guess you never know. I will keep everyone updated on anything that goes on, I am aware of the tranny failures and hope mine is exempt!

The 4 speed transmissions used in the 99 TLs tend to be more reliable than the 5 speed variant used in the 2000-2003 models. So you may have many miles to go before a problem.

The original transmission in my 99 TL made it to 173,000 miles.

Thanks, I hope it remains that long, I just got rid of my 92 Legend- fantastic car, 200k and no problems other than the AC compressor going out.

Actually, back to the original thread topic, I looked at the speaker covers while I was at lunch, and it is definitely stains on the cover cloth- I will post some pictures when I get home and have my camera.

Thanks for the welcome- nice TL, I'll get my pics up- it's a 99 heather mist with 18" Zink rims (on it when I bought it, kind of blingey but they look good) I need to get a bit more tint on the front windows, you guys will have to give me some tips on what else to do. I'm hoping to put some headers on in a few weeks when I get back from vacation.
