Angry ? Interference from Bose Stereo

This probably should be on the audio/electronics section, but have any of you noticed excessive static on your stereos? Whenever I drive to a certain area of town, a loud crackling/popping noise comes from the speakers. At first I thought it was radio interference, but the noise occurs in CD, Tape, or FM radio mode. Could the Bose amplifiers be more susceptible to interference? My friends stereo has no problems in the same area. The sound is very loud and annoying.

I have not noticed it while driving throught areas, but have heard it due to my cell phone.

I have read in other posts that the cell phone creates inteference and it does that right as the phone rings.

So yes the stereo can be susceptible to ambient signals. But I have only noticed it from my phone.

Hope this helps

same issue

I thought it was my ears. I can't duplicate the problem but it does happen. It sounds like some sort of a static surge. I haven't noticed it on my cd player but my car is only 2 weeks old. I hear it on FM stations. Very similar to the sound you hear listening to AM radio when there is a strong thunderstorm. It seems to just be the passengers speaker but I'm not sure.

My phone is a Nokia on AT&T digital. I used to put the phone under the ashtray, but noticed that I would not get the noise if I rested it on the hand hold on the door.

Thanks for all of your input. When I do hear the noise, my cell phone is off, and I have AT&T. The noise is constant, only when I reach a certain area on the way to work. This includes at least a 4 mile area out of 25 miles. It only started happening within the past 2 weeks. On the way home from work today, no noise at all. I even left the radio on an extra half hour in the garage just in case it might be an amp going bad after staying on for a certain amount of time. Also called the dealer. They said there are no Bose complaints so far. How close would a Nextel phone need to be to cause interference? Oh well I guess I have to wait till it is consistent in the dealer's driveway! If I take it in now, they are going to think I'm crying wolf. Argh!

It's not impossible for someone to be transmitting (illegaly) in the FM band around a particular area. Check it out in someone else's car and see if you get the same problem.

Nextel phones usually start interfering with Checkpoint deactivation systems about 5 away from them. (I know, I work in retail). If you're using one within 5 feet of a deactivator, it'll beep a lot and have a fit. If its just closed up and not transmitting or receiving, it will be fine until it starts ringing or you open up the flip face on the i1000 series.

Oh yeah, for those of you who don't know, I'm "the nephew" from the CT area/meets - just registered to try and become a lil more involved even though I'm too poor to own one of these cars just yet .

Welcome "Nephew." Thanks for the info on the Nextel. Hopefully this is the problem. I'm praying that nothing is wrong with the sound system. If it is someone illegally transmitting on the FM band, I hope they get caught by the FCC!

Actually, one of my old friends that lives in TX was running a pirate radio station at one point in time. He eventually got caught, told them it was a science fair project he liked a lot and left running, but evidently they periodically drive around in a van and home in on illegal signals. I'm sure if you go through the radio stations in your area if you notice a new one that doesn't really sound like an "official" radio station, you can notify the FCC. Contact information is available here. Hope this helps.

I would say that the fact that it happens in all stereo modes suggests an internal problem, not an external one.

Loud popping usually suggests a blown capacitor, a PCB crack, or a loose connection.

I have a Motorola Star Tac and have never had any interference.

Cell Phones Cause Static

If your cell phone is near any kind of speaker you will get a little buzz. When I am at work I know my cell phone is about to ring when my computer speakers start to buzz!

I am still having that intermittent loud static/popping type noise from the Bose stereo. Talked to the dealer last week and they said that this is the first complaint that they heard about and unless it was consistent it would be difficult to find. The bad thing is that whenever I drive near the dealer, they are closed or the noise does not occur. When the noise does occur, I have tried to accelerate or slow down just in case the car next to me is using a cell phone. If it is a Nextel phone making this happen, those phones must be really powerful. For those of you that have heard some type of interference, is the sound pretty loud and consistent no matter what the volume is? The other night I was driving home on the freeway and the sound woke up my wife. She now believes me that it is irritating and loud. I read on the CL forum that some of them have interference problems also, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing. After a while, the sound starts to hurt your ears. I'm hoping that the sound might blow the speakers and then the dealer will believe me that something is wrong.
