Thumbs up Installed Headers and Apexi V-AFC!

OMG!!!

First did the headers and took the car out and didn't really feel extreme power difference. The Apexi, we made VTEC kick in at 4400 rather than the stock 5500 and again, OMG!!!! Great mod, IMHO!

Uhhh you're sure it kicks in at 5500 stock? seems awful high for a car that rev's to 6200, I mean you'll be in vtec for about .1 seconds in 1st gear, .4 seconds in 2nd, or thereabouts. It would seem pretty useless if that were so.

Well, regardless of what he changed, the butt dyno says power... so I more or less trust that.

I agree with you 100%. Tomorrow morning I'm going to have it dynoed and do like 4 runs so they can adjust the VTEC properly.

Does anyone know at what exact RPM stock VTEC kicks in?

By the way, headers a must mod! Noticeable torque and definately on high end RPM. Don't get me wrong, it's no turbo, but you'll feel the power difference!

Are there any drawbacks in installing an AFC? added wear, warranty, etc? I know the usual anything that is proved to cause damage on the car will void the warranty, but will this?

if your adjusting vtec to engage at a reasonable rpm, i think youll be ok. gas mileage will be terrible though.
it feels like it engages at 4400 or so.

From acura.com article about CL/CLs:

"The VTEC-equipped engine delivers a substantial amount of horsepower, coupled with greatly increased torque at low-to-mid speed range. At low rpm, the intake valves follow low-lift, short-duration cam lobes with timing that optimizes cylinder filling. Additionally, the timing of the intake valves is staggered and their lift is asymmetric, creating a swirl effect within the combustion chambers. This increases burn speed and improves combustion stability and allowable
EGR rate. As the engine accelerates through 4400 rpm (4800 rpm on Type S), the intake rocker arms transition to actuation by high-lift, long-duration cam lobes designed to optimize high rpm output."

Question

So what's the verdict? 4400RPM is when stock VTEC kicks in? If so, I'm going to adjust it to 3400. Any feedback?

I think 3400 is kind of low there. I believe 3800 or higher is better. If you drive at 85+ MPH (who drive this fast all the time ) and you set it too low, your VTEC will be on all the time. Do you really want VTEC all the time ... I don't think it's good for the engine/fuel economy ....

But oh well, what do I know right?

For 1999 TL's (4 speeds) in 4th gear the engine turns 3000 rpm's at 90 mph. I dont know about you all but I usually don't cruise higher than 90. Of course I pass and race far past that, but definitely not cruise.

3400 would be on the order of 105 or so... I doubt that many of us actually go that fast when we're trying to save gas.

Can someone recommend what RPM I should set the VAFC to make VTEC kick in? I didn't get to dyno the car yet cuz my rims showed up around the time my dyno appointment was set to. Help! Currently, I have it set to 4400RPM and my fuel efficiency sucks! I filled up this morning, drove like 80 miles so far and I only have like 3/4 left. Just my imagination? Help fellas, I'm new at all this VTEC adjusting and what not. Kenny, what you think? 4400 good, or should I lower it a bit?

Aside from all that, the device looks pretty cool!

Well what was it stock?

Damn I didn't know vtec was THAT bad for fuel economy, and don't worry I get MUCH worse than you, ungrateful bastard, I get 14-18 mpg every tank!

Nonetheless play with it on the dyno, see what you get and where you like it...

I will confirm using my HELM manual tonight, but I hear/feel the VTEC transition at right around 4500 RPM.

If you set the VTEC transition point too low, you're not going to gain anything.. same as if you set it too high. Generally speaking, Honda sets it pretty much perfectly from the factory.

Hey AC check out this site.....
It's for a prelude, but it's a good start to set yours. I will (when have it installs back) lower the VTEC engage point a little, thinking 4000.

Some thoughts on altering the VTEC engagement point.Besides altering the point at which the VTEC system is engaged does this blackbox do anything else?.The reason I ask is that when the ecu that is in the car engages VTEC operation it also increases fuel injector duration and ignition timing.Unless both of these very important engine functions are altered along with the VTEC engagement point you may be running the engine in a lean condition which as you know is not good for an engine or it's emissions.

To assuage your concerns gen, yes it does switch over to the agressive fuel map tuned for the more agressive valve timing. They (apex-i) advertise this as a major feature over the rival vtec controllers (which it is)
