Question I'm thinking of getting a 02 TL-S 6-speed

Hi, I currently own a Maxima but i'm going to start shopping for a new car soon. My two options right now are 02 TL Type S (love that blue color with a body kit) and 02 Maxima 6-speed.
So I was just wondering if you really like your car, and if you had a second chance to buy it, would you do it again?
I'm 6'5" tall so legroom is one of the biggest priorities for me. How big is the aftermarket support for your cars?

Thanks a lot.
Andy

At your height, you're going to be disappointed with the interior space. You'll basically have to recline the seat back a long way to make room, and then your lateral view will probably be totally blocked by the B pillar. The TL seats dont go back far enough, and the silly thing is that there is still plenty of space for the seat to go back without contacting the rear seat.

Six speed in a 4 door sedan makes no sense for me. I drove stick shift Z cars for almost ten years and I don't miss it during every day driving. OK, once in a while it would be fun, but I'm perfectly happy using the sport shift to gain control of the engine when I need it.

The TL-S is 5-speed, not 6.

Thumbs down

He is talking about the new TL-S when it comes out with the 6-speed manual transmission.

To me, too much city driving. I had a 99 Accord 5 speed and I couldn't wait to get rid of the stick shift city for driving.

6 In da Hand

Dude,

The ride I had before my TL S-Type was a Probe GT 5-speed. I loved that car and I loved rowing through the gears. I was a bit bummed at first when the TL wasn't available with a 5 or 6-speed manual...but after I started using the SS shift mode...I was sold. It's not "perfect" but it's more than adequate for quick fun/performance driving for me.

Anyway...when are the 6-speed CL/TL S-Types coming out? Are they gonna have any other changes besides the tranny?

But...yeah...manual tranny in bumper-to-bumper traffic...YECH!

I really think the six speed depends on the person. I like how manual feels. I understand that the TL-S is a sedan, but if I was going for comfort, and convenience I'll go for an ES300 (Though the new one is really really ugly) I like the "sport" feel in the TL-S and a manual transmission would only enhance that. I am only 21 though and I'm sure as I get older that will change but for now, I'm not getting any younger. Only sad thing is the wait. Who knows, I may test drive the manual (should it ever come out) and prefer the automatic. But I do a lot of country/interstate driving so...

I have owned a corvette with 4spd. stick, two 5.0 liter mustang 5spd. and a Z-28 with a 6spd. I love the sport shift on the TL-type S and will never ever own another manual tranny!! There just isn't any need. The sport shift is great and so many of you guys drive in soo much stop and go traffic I just can't justify manual trannies anymore, especially now that the move is toward 5spd auto's.

Regarding the original Posters height. You are 6'5", you will not be comfortable in the TL-S. I'm 5'10" and it's fine, but I feel so much taller. You sit fairly high up, even with the electric seat lowered. Fortunately the TL-S is standard with the sunroof, so your noggin can be outside.

I'm 6'0" and the biggest problem is not legroom, it's the length of the steering column! The TL's steering column does not telescope at all. At 6'0" I push my seat back quite a ways to allow my legs to relax. However, at that distance the steering wheel is set pretty far away from me! I normally set the steering column at close to its lowest settings to bring it closer to my legs so I can comfortably reach it.

It may just be me, though. I like to be almost recumbent when I drive. If only the steering column telescoped about 1" closer to me, it would have been perfectly placed.

I'm 6'4" and my biggest problem shopping for a car wasn't so much leg room as headroom. I also have a '97 Maxima SE and it's a rarity in the sense that it doesn't have a sunroof. I deleted the option because it gave me back about 2" of headroom. I was going to get a '01 20th Ed Maxima SE but when I went to test drive I couldn't get comfortable in the thing--not enough headroom--and now the sunroof is mandatory.

The headroom on the TL-S is better (even with the sunroof), but not by much. I prefer the "Italian-style" seating, which is very upright. I hate tipping the seat back to get comfortable. As you probably have experienced yourself, with long legs and the seat all the way back, if you start tipping to gain headroom then you have a serious reach to get to the wheel. And since only some of the German cars have telescoping wheels this becomes a pain.

I know I'd be happier if the TL-S had another inch of headroom even now (2" and I'd be in heaven). Seeing as you're an inch taller than me, you may not fit comfortably. Leg room was not as much of a problem.

Unhappy

Leg room is not a problem. For me, at 6'4", HEAD room is the problem! I can't drive with the seat as upright as I would like it because my head hits the roof. I have had this problem in every sun/moon roof car I have had. But, at least the head room in the TLS is better than it was in the GS400!

Comfort is Key!!!

I'm 6'5 as well...I sat in every single Nissan and Infiniti at the dearlership and the only one I fit in, including the pathfinder and QX4, was the Q45!

That said, I went to the Acura dealership, sat in the MDX, fit well, wanted to see if I would fit into a car (at this time not knowing jack about the TL-S) happened to sit in a pimped out Aegean Blue TL-S, it was the best fit for me in the price range...Then I drove it and the rest is history.

My advice to you, narrow down a few cars that you really like. Drive them all. Drive them a lot. Try to get comfortable, and then go for the one which you are most comfortable with. I almost went with an A6 4.2 Sports Suspension, loved the car, definitely wanted to get it over the TL-S, but I fit better in the TL-S and I'm very happy with it, granted my seat is reclined down a lot.

Good Luck!

Lightbulb re: 6-speed

I can't help much on the height issue being that I'm only 5' 5", but the 6-speed isn't due out until the 2003 model which is about 14 months away.....

My previous car was a 2000 TL... and my 2002 TL-S seems like it has a touch more headroom. My salesdrone said the seats were lower and I guess that'd make sense since I definitely do not have to recline the seat as much as I did in the 2000. At 6'7" it's hard to find cars that I fit in comfortably, but I'm perfectly happy with the space afforded by the TL-S.

Just to let yall know that the 6-speed TL-S will not be coming out until 2003. The CL-S will be out first and that starts in early of 02. Sorry to disappoint you guys

Who's MedicSonic? Seriously, the only other car worth looking at is the TL, especially the TL-S.

Keep the '97 Max to drive when you want to row your own gears -chances are you won't get much on a trade anyways as it's now 2 generations behind the 2002 model.

You can drive the TL-S if you'll be in traffic, or want to go fast with an automagic.

I like the choice when I walk into the garage in the morning.

My 2000 Max feels bigger than the TL-S, but that may be because it sits higher.
