I'm gonna do it! '99 TL

http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/cto/2824608323.html

It took me a very long while to decide whether or not I wanted to cop me a 2nd gen tl. Reason being the recall on the transmission and what not. But yesterday I came upon this tl. Not a type s but a tl . Anyway I checked out the car today, & I was scared that this guy might have not known his shit, not have taken good care of the car, or abused the car. But the first thing he mentioned was the tranny problem, which he replaced or got fixed at a local trans shop that specializes in trans related work. The whole car was hella clean! New paint, hardly any scratches, no dents, etc. Inside the car I would rate it a 8. No rips or tears in the leather but a few cracks. Also the center console was worn out and doesn't close but nothing but a minor fix. Everything checked out, motor was well taken care if, all belts good, everything, but 1 thing made me take a step back from the deal...the back windows don't work or roll down. The owner didn't care about the problem because he has kids & they sit in the back. The front windows work though. Aso the sunroof and everything else. Ac cold everything works. Was gonna try to bring down the price but the best offer he got was $3000 so I beat the price by $3020 so I'm the highest offer so far! What do you guys think of the car from what has been said & from the post? Feed back would be great! Thanks.

From what has been stated - Car sounds like a great deal! IMO - Have a professional ACURA tech check out the car as well, they are trained to see the problems you will inevitably encounter.

Now you didn't mention how many miles the car has - Based on the price I'm guessing they are going to be pretty high? This is not necessarily a problem for the J32 however, since if they are taken care of they will last longer than you may even care to own the car.

Miles are important b/c if you are at 180k - 2XX, the car will need it's next 100,000 mile "tune up" including new belts, water pump, etc. This service will cost somewhere around $5,000 plus at the dealer and closer to $2,000 ~ $2,500 independent mechanic. That will add alot to the cost of you're "new" car.

Insta--where do you get your pricing??? USA dollars???

shop 105 service-- basic, 800-1200, dealer 1200-1500
add valve adjust 200, add all new hoses $100,,another 150 for tensioner pullies etc

5 grand? man, you are overcharging customers,, or overpaying your guy!!

the 99 had a 4 speed,
and was not subject to the recall- which only installed an oil sprayer thru the filler hole, dircted at 2nd gear--for extra cooling there,,only on the 5 speed trans

recall had ZERO to do with the clutch pack wearout/ warranty extension on 00-03 vins

You need to know what was done on this trans--wore out and rebuilt once by local shop? or what?? and at what miles,,what atf is it using,,honda atf or other brand?
how often changed?
thats the $2500 question right there! the trans
and the 105,,was the first one even done?

rear window motors are common failure, or the operating mechanism for it

as said above--a professional tech--one with ACURA knowledge should look the car over and under and test drive
things like dead stable temp, not varies with situation- is something a TL specialist will know that a regular honda guy doesnt,,or will tell you is normal when its actually a major problem!

other things to look at- radiator condition, coolant age, ps and brake fluid--changed when?
those can lead to expensive repairs

the real issue- do you have 3-5 grand more than the cars cost to fix things right?
now its a 8 grand car,,what can you buy for that? a lot of better cars than a 99 TL in need of shocks and this doesnt work and thats busted,,,,

remember... kids destroy interiors, and probably why it got new paint!!

he showed me papers of the repair on the trans & it has been rebuilt. idk what kind of atf fluid its running though. i should ask the owner tomorrow morning. & yeah it got its 105 services done if thats what you're wondering.

but how much would it cost to repair the back window issue?

radiator is new, the owner said he had it changed and coolant is new also. all the flushes has been done also.

so if anything, i should bring it to an acura dealer to get it further checked up?

no, you should run far away from this car

On the surface it appears to be well cared for ---at least recently things were fixed,
BUT
its a hawaii car,, I lived there,,you know what it does to cars...

its easy to love the TL curves and performance,,
but its a 99,,,when many things were improved over the next few years.. its a risk

If you have the 4 grand (allowing title change-Hi. insurance of 100 a month etc in cost)
and wont freak if the car last 12 months,,or requires $1000 in bearings and brakes, then go for it..it may last years!!

If thats going to make it tough on you--there are way better options
you could get a decent car from the mainland shipped over!
