I'm getting 16 mpg...

is that normal??...
i mean, i'm doing 95% city driving, shouldn't i be getting at least 18 or 19 mpg??....16 mpg sounds a bit low...
could there be a problem with my car??...i mean, i have a CT air filter, which i thought should help with the miles per gallon and everything else is stock....

i was thinking, could this be the result of me driving the car everyday for like 3-5 miles to school, going to class, and then a hour later, drive 3-5 miles home.....and doing this about 3-4 times a day....
could this be the cause???...

also, sometimes i see some white smoke coming out of my exhaust after i shut off my engine, which never happened b4...as well as some burning scent that i smell in the car when i drive with the climate control set over 73 degrees....weird...
could there be an exhaust problem or engine prob.??

hope someone can help.....

its probably your driving short stop go driving is bad for milage. the smoke is probably just moisture. you really dont drive far/long enough to burn up the moisture in your exhaust and when you shut it off you see steam

Do you use SS, or leave it in D5 (or whatever)?

Yep.

Here's an idea- eliminate one of the trips. Stay at the library or student union. Alternately, walk or ride your bike for one of the trips. Alternately, try to put together a better (tighter) class schedule.

Just some thoughts.

gohan,

Based on your type of driving it sounds normal. try taking a long weekend drive for a full tank, which is 400+ miles of highway driving. For you it is like going up to the Catskills or Newport and see what your mileage is, I bet it will be close to 30mpg strictly highway.

Also keep in mind that on Nov 15 the winter gas hits our pumps and you will get less mpg (but less emissions).

400+miles on a full tank of gas?? dam i can't even manage 300 on a roadtrip on a tank. But then again flying on the NYS thurway at 3 am and doing 100mph probably isn't helping the gas mileage.

I've hit 400 once when I was driving cross country, but normally I get around 19-23 mixed city/highway. Most of the time my gas light usually lights when I hit 310 miles. One time I actually ran out of gas at 318. Oops:

Sorry about your mileage. Just filled up with 16.1 gallons and 417 miles. Mixture of city and highway. I have never gotten lower than 24MPG mixed in my 2003 TLS. MY 1999 TL never got higher than 23-24MPG.

I used to drive about 3500 miles a month, all highway, averaging anywhere from 28 to 33 mpg.

I now drive about 300 miles a month, all city, and have been getting about 15 mpg, mostly using the sport shift. Recently, I fractured and dislocated my left elbow playing soccer. Therefore I can't use my left arm at all to drive/steer and can't use the sport shift. And because I can only keep on hand on the wheel, I probably haven't been driving as aggressively as I usually do. Consequently, my gas mileage has gone up to close to 20 mpg.
