ignition switch recall

I purchased a '99 TL in '06 and within a year realized that I can remove the key from the ignition while in park (not a hugh problem, I've done it maybe twice) and it bagan stalling for no apparent reason, sometimes while on the interstate at 70mph (a HUGE PROBLEM). After 2 visits to the shop and being told they couldn't figure out the problem without duplicating the stalling, I hit the internet. Ok, now I know about the recall so I took it to a Honda dealer (no acura dealer nearby) and was told 500.00 to fix it and that they couldn't do recall work on an Acura. I called the Acura dealer and discovered that the recall on the stalling issue was "fixed" on my car but the key removal is still open. Has anyone had this issue with having the recall work done but the problem still exists and will the recall work for the issue of removing the key while in drive solve the stalling? In other words, is it the same part?

Hi Cocogree :

No, one is a mechanical lock-out and the other keyed electrical switch.

I had the same situation happen. Acura will NOT "re-do" a recall even if it fails further down the line. What you might be able to argue is the lock-out recall (which you seem to need) requires Acura to disassemble the ignition, and you might get a break on the labor. If not, there's a DIY on how to replace it and its not too bad a job, with exception of the "mystery" screw. Search the DIY section and you'll get to know all about it.

if the car suddenly dies while running or the dash lights go crazy- that may be the ignition switch
Some people have replaced theirs 3-4 times on a 99

-fixed- on a recall simply means it was done- but the same problem may occur again and again
The ignition switch is a great example- and easy DIY according to members here
Open is just that- still available to you

check the details of the key removal recall online-
the people at 1-800-382-2238 x5 acura customer care- can read from a book to you, and ask them to open a `claim file` on your problem
A real acura rep will call you back - they have to check with the dealer to see whats been said or done so far,,may be a day or 2 to get back to you
Without it being seen at the acura dealer yet for the prob and diagnosis as a recall repair, there isnt much corp can do until that occurs

yo, I had the same exact problem on my '00 prelude. There was a ignition recall done in the earlier years but then it started doing it again about 4 years later. I would be driving down the freeway and with no warning the car would just shut off. No warning no nothing, its just like if you were to turn off the car. Normally, the car is rolling enough where I can just pull over and start it back up. Sometimes I can do it while its rolling since it was a 5spd. After a while, it would not start up right away and I had to try a bunch. Crank but not turn. Honda stated since i already did the recall then its not the ignition. My mechanic could not figure it out. After a while I took it into honda, and they determined it was the recall and replaced it. AGAIN. Anyways, the ignition recall, it shuts down your car without any warnings like if you were to shut her down. Bad connection in the ignition I believe. Honda's also had the issue you had where you can take the ignition key out while driving. You sound like you have a 2 in 1 deal here.

As mentioned above, the replacement ignition switches can and do fail. My 1999 TL is on its third ignition switch.

And Acura will only replace it for free once.

The part can be found for $100 or less and you can install it yourself. I installed the last one in my TL.

Here's a link to an excellent DIY thread by forum member 6MTUA5:
