Ignition Key Replacement
Hi All :
I know this topic is well covered in previous posts, but I found most were from 2006 or older. I was wondering if anything had changed with regard to programming the immobilizer or is it still a windfall for the stealerships ?
Also, there was some discussion around if you can cut a key and that most key cutting machine won't work of these keys. Is this still true ?
Many thanks to all who reply.
smarty.

I went to the dealership and they said it was free to program and cut if you have a blank key that works with our cars and the original key. IF you dont have either he said 70 gets me a new key cut and programmed.
I ordered a key off ebay with the transponder for 15, waiting for it to come in the mail, see if it works or not.

I too had been reading old threads on this topic hoping for a fresh one. In anycase, here is what I did to get a new transponder key for my 2004 TL.
Step 1 ($10): Blank OEM Key off ebay
Step 2 ($6): Have key cut at local key shop
Step 3 ($55): Call Mobile locksmith who came to my office while I worked and programmed my key.
The mobile locksmith has a computer which seems to have put my TL into Key programming mode. It literally took him 5 mins and my replacement key worked flawlessly. All of the dealers I spoke to said it would take around an hour to do this programming.
If you can find a dealer who can do the entire thing for $75, go for it. Otherwise I hope my experience can help someone else.
Note: I found no dealerships in my area (SF Bay Area) which would program for free. Price for programming ranged from $75 ~ $105

My key died one day so the engine wouldn't start. The dealership sold us the new key (20 or so) and then programmed it and the whole thing was under ten minutes.
Then again, we took our 89 Legend there, bought a TL as a replacement for our old friend the Legend and had both vehicles regularly serviced there... might be why it was free. That and they no longer ask which vehicle is ours. They know.

Replacement key project complete.
Got a "white" key blank from a US dealer for ~$14. Went to my local hardware store and asked if they had a key for a TL ? They did in fact have a key (no immobilizer though) so I had them cut one as an emergency door opener. Oh...and while your cutting that key can you please cut this other one ? (with immobilizer). Sure, he replies..no charge. Total cost $3.
I happen to know a tech who works at a Honda dealership and offered to program my key for free..... and I took him up on it !
Total cost for the replacement, including an "emergency access" key ...$17.00
