I want to polish my knob

I want to polish my knob
Yes, my shifter knob needs some work. I've worn away what seems like a layer of varnish or clearcoat and it looks like crap. You can see here...
I'm hesitate to do this since I have just screwed up one of my headlights, trying to polish it. But while doing the headlights, I started wondering whether sanding and polishing might be the way to clean up my shifter. I had been resigned to trying to buy a replacement. Has anyone had this problem with their shifter and how did they fix? Any ideas?

and with a thread title like this, what did you expect? 100% mature responses? are you one of those guys (or girls with the purse) that can make fun of others, but when the tables are turned, you clam up and cry?

what do you think this is - rocket science? clean it up or sand it down ever so lightly and refinish it - not that hard to figure out.

In both cases, your knob is
Unless you sand it down with VERY VERY FINE paper..not 320. more like 2000. Then hit it with clear coat. But that knob is Get a new leather-wrapped one. Looks way better and no probs like this.
