I thought our cars could accelerate faster?

I was driving around 80ish on the carpool lane today and suddenly a acura legend (latest model one..dunno which year) car was tailgating me like a mother....i was like..damn man..i was going a lil faster than most of the cars so i dunno wth his problem was..so he kept on tailgating me the whole time..for about a good 2 mins..and he suddenly got an opening. He eventually speeded up and got caught in traffic again... He was stuck so bad taht i was still cruising at teh same speed and caught up with him...and when he saw me..he gunned it. ..he got caught in traffic again and this time, when i got ahead of him, he came back to my lane and tailgated me AGAIN. Eventually he got an opening and when the guy tailgaiting me got the chance he floored the car. and went to the right lane. He got a good 2 seconds of flooring before i caught on..I quickly floored my car..I was at about 70ish now..I shifted to SS mode and i was in 4 gear. I was in the 2.5k rpm I downshifted to 3rd..then suddenly it went back to 4th (i dunno what happened..i think i upshifted again and din't notice)....he quickly caught up with me. When his front bumper caught up to my front right wheel..that's when i slowly and i mean slowly advanced more than him... Eventually i let go at 110..didn't feel as though i should risk my life for some crazy driver..he went his way weaving in and out of traffic.

But ..to the main point, I thought that our car could accelerate way faster than that. I nearly lost to some bastard with a Legend..what's up with that?

Plz..don't flame.i just want info..thanks.

1st off.. Legends were never slow. Even the 1987 Legend coupe could do 0 to 60 in 7.7 seconds. ( I read the original Road and Track article today, its still in my memory )

Are you referring to the RL possibly? They are still being made.

The last Legend (in the US) was the 1995 model.

Was it a sedan? Perhaps you messed with the GS model? It has 230 hp and can do 0 to 60 around 6.5 seconds with the right driver. Some were automatics, some came with 6 speed manuals.

Regardless, Legends were never slow, it was a fair race.

about the SS....i don't really use it when i'm racing around....it's gets weird after a while. just put it in 5sp auto and floor it......u'll get the most downshifting and power, and you won't mess up with the shifting and there wont be any delays in shifting.

You didn't downshift into 3rd ... The car didn't let you go into 3rd. It says "3" but it should have went right back to "4" right away and blinked. That happened to me earlier today too ... You need to downshift before you get on the gas so you can stay in 3rd up to 100mph. Thats why the car felt so slow. 4th gear is an overdrive gear and is almost worthless below 100mph.

Look on the bright side. He got a 2 second jump but you still held him off.

BTW, at those speed, you're better off just stomping the gas cause if you get caught in 4th gear, it's all over. Or just tap the breaks to slow down and then downshift to 3rd.

Do you have a TL-S? If not, then an 03 Legend and 03 TL-P are very close in 0-60 ... 1/4 ore time.

That's why I love my 99TL. 4 speed tranny. When I punch it at 70-80 the car rockets off, downshifting into third. I've got a few mods to help me along too.

what do you have? TL-P or TL-S? That makes a huge difference. I don't know why it jumped back into 4th but it can be possible you accidentally shifted into 4th without realizing. I've done that before. But as for leaving it in auto and going, you'll just end up in 4th and not go anywhere, eventhough dropping from 5th to 3rd is the main cause of a dead tranny, it is the fastest way to launch at highway speeds.

FYI: You are only allowed to downshift to third *IF you are going less than 85MPH. You mentioned you were @ 70 when you started to accelerate...by the time you switched over to SS...you would of been above 85.

Try it...next time you are cruising on the highway...turn cruise control on...then try to downshift to 3rd. Increase your cruising speed and try to downshift every 5mph and you'll notice it caps at around 85.

Don't apply gas before trying to downshift. That'll shoot the RPM too high once it downshifts, and that's why the computer doesn't let you.

Instead, while going less than 80, just floor the car in D5 and it'll downshift to 3rd for you.
