I thought Acura's were supposed to keep there value?

One of the reasons I went so far out to buy this car was because Acura's supposedly keep a high resale value. I paid $29,500 for my car brand new only 5 miles. (2001 TL)
I just check Kelly Blue Book on my car, and the value is only $18,500!!!!!! MY GOD! I know you loose a few thousand driving off the lot, but losing $10, 000 in only two years??? Something doesnt seem right...

That must be the trade in value.. cuz that is pretty damn low..
Well consider this.. the 01 is now techincally, a 3yr old car.. I also have an 01 and looked at the value recently with shock to how little it was worth.

How many miles do you have?

If possible, try to sell it privately, you almost always come out better.

Have you looked at what other '01 TLs are going for in your area? Good start is autotrader.com. Gives you at least a rough idea of what the market value might be. KBB is a tool (and some may argue its real world validity), but the best comparison is what people are selling similar cars for in or around your area. Just my 2 cents ...

Just for comparison, KBB says that a 2001 Lexus ES300 (which was more expensive back then - and still is) with 30,000 miles is worth $20,200. So the TL value seems right in line, given its lower price at the time you purchased it.

I bought a 2001 TL in 2000 for $27,000, drove it about 22,000 miles and smoked in it the whole time. I sold it a year later with a scratched bumper and a cracked windshield. I got $24,000 bucks for it. Lot better than my BMW for resale, I can tell you that.

Regardless, the problem with trade in values these days is a poor economy and new car incentives.

That sounds like you got a good price...... obviously it was a private dealer then?

I think you are looking at wholesale values. Actually Honda/Acura products do hold their value very well when compared to other competing brands.

Be thankful you didn't have a brain freeze and buy a comparably equipped and priced GM product. I guarantee that the resale value on those cars are several grand less than our Acuras!

Smile $16,200 for my 2001 TL

I just got my white 2001 TL from a private party in San Clemente for $16,200. 81k miles, body is in great shape (one ding). Original tranny (bummer). The dealer was selling the same model for about 24k (my wife made me check before I jumped on this deal).

1/3 its value in 3 years is reasonable. why would someone buy a 3 year old car for 25 when a new can can be had for under 30?

I think my next car will be certified preowned something.

Acuras do hold their value. Be glad you didn't buy something that doesn't.

A used car is "worth" only what someone is willing to pay. Why would someone pay $25,000 for a 2+ year old TL when they could buy a brand spankin' new 2003 TL-S for about $28,000? Only a sucker would do that. How much would you pay for your car in it's current condition? I know I wouldn't even pay $20,000 for it.

The trade in on my '00 Dodge Intrepid for my TL was $9500 when I traded it in 12/01 (45% residual after only 15 months of ownership!!!). I paid $21k for it new. I'm so glad I traded UP to an Acura. I'll take 45% residual after five years anyday.

$18,500 for a 01 seems just about right if not more sorry to burst your bubble but just like you i am surprised that they are not really that good. saw a 01 CL-S the Yesterday with only 45k miles and navi for $16k . Another example i saw a 2002 Acura with 45k Miles completely "repainted" for 15 grand. Your best bet is to take it to carmax and see what they give you.

Tracer: what dealership is giving you $18,000 ? if i get even $15k for my car i would be really happy. Another member on the board claimed to have gotten his 03TL or TL-S appraised and they only offered him $ 23k.
