I hate the 2g TL

I fucking hate acura tl from 99-03!!!!!! My new tranny 3 months old started shifting super hard couple of days ago. Today it started slipping:angryfire

( acura)

And since my car was supposedly fixed in 04 I'm not covered under the recall.

you gotta admit though, if it wasn't for the transmission, 2nd gen TL is a fucking good car.

I've done six conversions from 5-speed to auto, auto to 5-speed, on hondas, vw, bmw

But for some reason I don't want the TL in a 6-speed i drive about 60 miles there and back to work sometimes having to sit in traffic. I have an integra 5-speed to jerk around when i have the urge to drive stick.......but the car has no front end right now so if i have to give the TL to get fixed I'm stuck in a rental.

Why do you think you are not covered warranty
If you just had it replaced- it has its own warranty

The RECALL was a seperate issue from the trans warranty, and even if you are VIN over the cutoff number in mid 03, acura is covering those owners with trans failure now too. They know it wasnt fixed - they just needed a number to settle the court case and start replacing transmissions

so whats up vetalik- whats the story here?

i know how you feel, mine just went out and i have the "less shiity 4spd" replacment only lasted me 28k miles. i love the car but i cant afford to keep paying out of pocket for a new tranny. the 2gen TL will be a VERY rare car once they all start going out of warrenty and noone will buy them.

When I had it fixed the first time acura service manager told me i'm fucked. called the 800 acura number they said no they wont cover it that was last year. I took it to a local transmission shop paid 3500 they put a new one in. June it took a shit on me they had it for a week rebuilt it. today it really started to slip I still have a remaining warranty for 2 years or now 15k miles left...

the issue is the shop is pretty reputable i was referred by 4ish people. I'm taking it in tomorrow i know they have to tear it apart and fix something it just pisses me off that i wont have my car i don't have another car to drive at the moment. So that means i have to either rent or find someone to lend me a car.

oh and I'm going to be demanding an extension on the warranty since they cant get it right on the second time around this will be try number 3 and it lasted me only 10k miles.

I swear 5 years down the road ads for the 2nd gen tl's are going to read something like this...

"Buy this great car only 80k miles will come with extra transmission (labor to replace not included) " very rare tl only had to replace transmission every 15k.......

Your problem lies not with acura but the place that rebuilt it. They obviously didnt use the upgraded parts or do a good job. This is one of the reasons to get the acura rebuilt trans. They have all the upgrades.

04-had oil kit something put in due to recall..they called it fixed. that is the reason they didn't want to cover the replacement when it went out again in 06.

as far as what they told me is that they did supposedly use the updated parts from acura

-------------
Add to my first post i dont hate acura litterly just P.O. right now since its all a headache

welll at least it is a good thing that the 05 Transmissions are WAYYY better then it was before... the only reason why our transmissions were so crappy was because it was made in Japan and now they are made here in Marysville, OH

Man I love my TL, I'm just dreading the day my tranny drops a duce on me. I have nightmares sometimes. I have almost 95k on mine and from what it seems like they all eventually crap out. Anyone ever been lucky enough not to have to replace it? And how well made are the newer model TL trannies made? Cuz I can see myself buying one when its time for a new whip.

I wish I was I wish I was. I have the very lastest <-- i know not a word

of the TL-S made in 03 and i been to 4 Acura dealers. Called the 800 number moaned bitched whined complained been nice pretended i was someone else. Tried everything they all say the same thing mine is not covered. I have two other friends with an 02 cl-s and a 99 TL both over 150k still good well the cl-s is starting to slip.

Also when they rebuilt the transmission the last time they replaced the housing why i don't know but they just did and you can tell its been fixed. Its like a painted silverish/grey color.

Today when I was out to get groceries my tranny got stuck in park, I restarted the car twice and it loosened up, and lately it's been making a very loud metal on metal sound when I put the car in reverse. Did any of these things happen before your tranny went out on ya? Just curious.

one time i put it in reverse and it just didn't do anything.

for me the last time shifted very rough when cold

driving on the freeway at 60 it down shifted from 5th to 2nd then 3rd(happened 3-4 times) thats when it got bad

going up hills it would slip

from park to drive it would take anywhere from 3-7 seconds to engage

then finally started not engaging in to gear when it did i would only be able to drive 100ft and it would slip......

Just because they pulled out the trans and painted the case doesnt mean its new. How can you tell its been fixed? I dont trus any of the large chain rebuilders that just brinem in swap parts out and slap them back together. Honda obviously did something to help correct teh problem because failure rate of the new rebuilt units since feb 05 is almost none. (we have had 2 -3 and we dont even know if its the normal failure and if they got teh upgraded trans) what ever honda did isnt getting to the trans shops cause they are still failing
