Cool How's your engine sound?

Anyone got any under-the-hood videos/audio recordings of how their engine sounds up close with the cover off? I'd be interested in hearing it.

sound is going to be the same. the cover is for looks and acts as a somewhat of a heat trap.

And from the inside (not as loud) [showing my RPM bounce after acceleration]:

at idle it sounded fine, when you gave it throttle it sounded like the EGR valve was opening too soon. It's hard to say with out looking at it myself though!

i watched it again - idle is fine but when u revved it a little it made a bad noise. its got to be something with the valves. if you want me to ill post a video of my car if you really want to compare it. dont count on me posting it any time soon.

how is the car while ur driving it?

valves would make a sound at idle most likely; one way to tell if it's the valves is to use the socket extension trick! Do you know that one?

My car does this too. The tranny disengages and then reengages the gear and you get a little engine braking. Its normal, happens on our RL as well.

Due to a bug (and mangling of further posts afterwards) I don't think anyone can see rob-2's response. Here it is:

I just never recall this happening before. Would a bad tranny NOT do this?

gold2003tl (90): Yes I would appreciate it. I just need a reference.

Russell The Love Muscle: Let's say the EGR valve is opening too soon. What could be a possible cause (and fix)? And can you fill me in on the "socket extension" trick?

you could try cleaning the EGR valve, try seafoam in the engine first if that doesn't help you can remove it and get to work with a can of brake clean. Otherwise put one on the car that you know works properly; whether it be new or one off of a good running TL.

Socket extension-It's not easy to describe but I'll do my best. Take a socket extension, the longer the better, I use a 9" 3/8 extension. But you take one end of the extension and rest put it on the valve cover above a valve, then put your ear on the other end and you will be able to hear any slight valve noise much easier. Then move it from valve to valve and listen to each one. It works similar to the thing doctors use to listen to your heartbeat; so if you can get one of those that would work better!

If you're trying to find a problem, you'll find one. What I am telling you is a new tranny, one in perfect workign order does this. If inlight of this information you wish to find a problem with your tranny... it's your life.

Our 2000 TL and 20005 RL both do this, and have since day one. All our Hondas have done this.

rob-2: I wish I had the time to just go out to my car and say "Let's see what's wrong today?" when I really had no basis to believe anything was wrong. If what you say is normal operation then I guess the bounce doesn't mean anything...but it's still a new occurrence and I've only had the car for a little under 4 months. But the ultimate reason is that my performance has been significantly suffering and it was a drastic change/sudden realization. So anything that seems "new" seems a valid candidate for a culprit.

It's just that that tach needle is so "unsteady" when driving. Sometimes it's a single bounce and then a "hover". Is it that my new trans just isn't "broken in"?

Russell: I've done the IM EGR port cleaning and probably have seafoamed at least 5 times in the last 4 months. The first time I seafoamed was around when performance _started_ to decline. See my Chronology since I had the car post in my long ass thread.
