How to tell if new transmission? Help

Well today I got my 02 TLS back from acura after a tranny replacement. They said they swapped it out for a "new model" that wont have the preceeding problems. However, when I actually stuck my head under the hood today and took a look the metal shell of the transmission looks original. Do they actually unbolt and bolt on a new one, or just replace the guts inside? because the outer metal has road dirt on it and looks like the rest of the engine. I'd like to know I didn't get jipped on the deal.
The work order has this listed:

R&R NEW TRANS & PCM:
1 ECU
1 WARRANTY A/T KI

Any ideas guys? I cant really see much without putting the car on the lift, but i'd like to know for sure before I go back to acura and ask them if they really changed it out.

Thanks,
Chris

All trannies are Repaired and Rebuilt. Thats what I assume the R&R stands for. What they mean to say is that the Tranny was redesigned but they still haven't fixed the problem complete only made it less frequent.

Odd, why did the service guy say I had to wait a week for him to "order" me a transmission? I would have thought he would have said, hey I need to rebuild yours.

They don't rebuild your bad tranny and then give it back to you. The one you got replaced with, if not new, would be someone else rebuilt unit. Your bad tranny will be shipped back to Honda, rebuilt, assign tracking number, and then put back to the factory parts department for other dealerships to order.

I suppose I should have put a black X on my transmission so I knew if it actually was changed. I just drove down to the corner store and doing 30mph it jumped gears on me. it felt like it dropped into 1st and then into 4th real quick..all in a matter of a second probably. I wasn't on the gas or anything just coasting along. I'm wondering if thats just the transmission trying to learn shifting points since it was replaced?

my shift points on my second tranny are screwed. 3rd is sooo jumpy and all the others are jumpy too but third is terrible. I am going back in too, b/c its been over 2000 miles and nuthing changed as far as a break in or settle in period or anything weird like that. basically just waited so i could say i tried it for awhile and am still not satisfied.

Hey, listen...I know everything after two transmission changes!!! Yes, you will never get new transmission and you will never get yours back. It will go into a pile of bad ones waiting for its turn to be fixed or scrapped. You gonna get somebody else’s fixed transmission. Be careful when you chose! I am half serious... After my first replacement failed (it was sluggish and slippery from the start and lasted only 1k or so), I asked dealer's service advisor to talk to Acura mechanic and try to get the best transmission they got. I think Acura people know what transmission has better chances to last. Later the service guy told me that he did exactly that. And what do you know! My second replacement feels as good and as quick - if not better - as the original one and I haven't had any problem for already 16k (knock on the wood)! Whether it's a pure luck or they really did something - I'll never know...

you guys really have me worried now. I'm frustrated with this transmission. I'm driving it around town today and it just feels wrong. I hope it works out the kinks or I'm going to have to take it back.

I call my service advisor and he say: " what can we do for you today?" i say" what do you think? I have and 02 TL-s so its either brakes or tranny." but on this occasion..its both...oh and the belt is squeekin again too!" gotta laugh about it at this point.
