How much would YOU pay for an '02 TLS?
Hey guys, I think I might be close to find the TLS i've been seeking for my wife.
I'm looking at an '02 TLS w/ nav. The thing is the car has 65k on it. But it has the extended 100k warranty. How much would you pay for a 1-2year car with that many miles?
Thanks!
Keep in mind also, that the color is green/tan. Not my first choice. But not bad either.

I just bought one w/ navi for 20k that had 33k miles on it. Its silver w/blk interior (2nd choice color). I think I got a good deal on it. Are you buying the one from that guy in Pleasonton/Dublin? I think I saw a post on that car. I wouldn't do it for 22k. Too many miles. If he goes down to 19k I would do it but nothing more than that. Keep looking you will find better deals (if thats the car your talking about).
KO

19 K for a 2002 TL-S w/nav AND extended waranty? Are you joking? Please tell me you are because I am nervous that our TL is depreciating faster than our 300m... The dealer will not sell that car for 19k. Period. It is worth 22 K, and if he doesn't sell it to you he will sell it to someone else. I have quite a few friends in the auto world who will tell you that the ammount of miles on the odometer does very little to determine value... Find out if the car has all service history/paperwork... it is a big plus. I think your getting a good deal. Best of luck in your decision.
resale value is more than perception...the reality is that there are two expensive features to this car that will hurt resale value....type 'S' & Navi. Both are nice upgrades that cost $2k each, but when it comes to 2 year old resale, the net proceeds of each upgrade is about $500.
As for mileage, it counts in a big way. There is one heck of a difference between 40k and 66k.
I just bought a brand new left over tl3.2 (p) for 25.4k and I'm looking forward to the highest resale ratio when I sell it in three years.

Using KBB
if you take a look at the number from KBB (yes they are evil and skewed to the dealers but..)
TRADE IN - 17500
RETAIL - 22500
USED - 19450
Most likely it was a wholesale purchase or trade-in. If it was wholesale it was probably under the 17500, if it was trade-in then use 17500. The extended warranty is a wash becuase it COMES with that model year due to the tranny issues. So you have to ask yourself is 4500 a fair profit for the dealer? Not in my book.
then think how much is it really going to cost you. Let me make some basic assumptions here. Let say you can get the used one for 19500. Right now with incentives (cash to dealer, low finacing rate..and new model coming in)..I have seen people post on here about getting 03 TLS with Navi in the 28500 neighborhood.
assume you keep the car for three years - and drive 12k a year.
28500 @ 2.9 for 60 months is about 492.00 a month
19500 @ 6.0 (avg used car loan rate) for 60 months is 357.66 a month
(assumptions are 1000 down, 60 month loan).
The 03 TLS will cost you 17712 over three years
The 02 TLS will cost you 12875 over three years so 4837 less but..
at the end of those three years you will owe 11,480 on the 03 TLS
and 8069 on the 02 TLS so 3411 less
Now - at the end of the three years you would have an 03TLS with 36000 miles or a 02TLS with 100000 miles.
Going back to KBB using Private Party values on a 3 year old TL with 36000 and a 5 year old TL with 1000000.
2000 TL w/36000 miles - 18760
1998 TL 3.2 w/100000 miles - 9790
Is your head spinning yet
bottom line
At the end of three years - Brand new you spend 17712, owe 11480 and sell for 18760 - total cost over three years 10432
Used - you spend 12875, owe 8096 and sell for 9790 - total cost over three years - 11154...in the end it costs you 722 more to own the used car over three years than the new car!
( a lot of assumptions here but most of them are basically in line with reality).
just my 2 cents

Nothing depreciates the value of a car faster than mileage (well, other than wrecking the car).. Its simple fast that's well know to everyone in the auto industry...

I'm about to bite on a '02 TL-S with the color combo I want (silver/black). The car has Nav as well. The body of the car is MINT, not a single dent or doording. The front bumper has a small nick on it and the rear bumper has a couple of issues as well. But besides the bumpers, it's cherry.
The seller is asking for KBB basically. What do you guys think at $22k? The car has 42k miles on it. (it's an '02 model w/ a late '01 production date)
The tranny was replaced just recently by the dealer.
Also, if the car is still under factory warranty, I can purchase the extended warraty correct? What do you think about that? (do you know pricing as well?)
