How do you install a steering wheel?

I just got a TypeS wheel i'd like to put in my 99 TL. Are there any instructions on how to install it and do i need any special tools? Thanks in advance.

Wow! Aren't you afraid of messing with the airbag and whatnot? I'd just take it to the dealer and let them switch it out for you! (But then again, I don't work on my car myself... figure that's what money's for! )

Good luck,

V.

hmm, I hadn't thought about the airbag. Im just a student so I try to save money wherever I can If messing up the airbag is a big risk I'll have to take it to the dealer, but if it can be done yourself I'd like to do it.

Well, I *heard* it's something like $1500.00 to replace an airbag if it goes off! Plus, there's got to be sensors and stuff... might be easier to pay for this one... than to *pay* for this one!

When the dealer did mine I think he only charged me for one hour of labor.

Dont' scare him!!!

You have to disconnect the battery and wait for at least 3 minute before start working. You can download instruction here.
ACCORD STEERING WHEEL

This is an instruction for ACCORD, but it's same!!

You have to have STEERING WHEEL PULLERto do the job, so if you're not expert, I recomend not to mess up with it.

On the other hand, if you take it to the dealer, it takes about an hour and half to do the job, so they'll not going to charge too much. (around $100)

Call the local dealership, and find out how much they'll charge you.

Good luck!!

Davediego - I've done this and it wasn't too bad. Disconnect the battery and wait three minutes. Beforehand write down your radio code and all your station #'s. Follow the instructions on the link mentioned in the post above - I didn't need a puller at all - the wheel just pulls off as you wiggle it. MY BEST HINT is that before you pull it use a thin magic marker and draw a line thru the area where the wheel goes onto the spline. Put the new one on the same way or you'll have to re-do it all over again because the car will be going straight ahead and the wheel will be pointing or aiming left or right. In fact, before you start the job I would park the car wheels straight, steering wheel straight too and go from there. Hope this helps! After I did it three times I got it right!

I spent some time at my dealer today, got my brakes done, some other stuff... Ive been fighting with my service manager who is also my personal friend to give me a new steering wheel, because mine is wearing down fast... He said "HELL NO". He said the dealership WILL NOT install it because unless its an EXACT part number match for a '99 TL, they wont do it. liability risk... So in the end today, he leads me to the shop, and hands me a wheel from a new MDX and says "good luck" He throws away 50 a month he said, because they cant sell them, too much of a risk of someone on eBAY buying one and killing himself... So thanks again guys for the tips above, but if you want todo the type-s swap, be prepaired to do it YOURSELF!!!

EEE GAD! I'll sell someone my relatively new TLs steering wheel, I want to get a RSX/Honda S2000 sized wheel. Our wheel was designed to be used by grandma or something, its huge... But in reality, its not a wheel I want to be using when I finally take my TL to the track. Anyone know if the RSX Wheel will fit?

One thing I am not sure if the type-s wheel is different from 99, the airbag itself. I know 2002+ model have dual stage airbag while 99 doesn't. Would there be a problem when you need it to deploy? Look further, it might look good now, but it might not save your life later. Just a guess, not sure on this. If dealer refuse to do it (even it's your friend), maybe there's a reason. good luck.

well after taking apart the entire thing i see how they have it rigged, and its actualy really really simple. now my new one is on, and physically there is no difference from the old one. becides, if i could disable the airbags in my car, i would do it in a heartbeat. i have glasses. i drive with my hand on the top of the wheel, not the sides. so if they deployed id have a broken arm, id be blind from glass in my eyes, on top of the whiplash and poison gas filling my lungs and burning my skin
