Woolite carpet cleaner works very well.
Get a nice soft bristled brush and really work it in there.
I've been known to take them to the DIY car wash place too. I spray them down with the soap and then rinse.
Then the trick is to get all the excess water out of them.
I use a plastic ice scraper. Hold it down at the top of the mat and pull it toward you. Really pullls out a lot of water. Let em air dry and you're good to go.

I have transparent floor mats (from wal-mart) on top of the original floor mats. It takes all the dirt and is easy to clean.
I was first hesitant to buy the transparent mats but when I put them in my car, it looked allright.

Regular detergent is too harsh for the floor mats. I use woolite (not the carpet cleaner) and hose them down. I lightly use a scrub brush (no broad strokes) to help get the dirt out.
I get the water out by using a wet/dry shop vac. That takes out almost all of the water, and laying hem in the sun afterwards for a bit will evaporate the rest.

I use a small amount of dish soap and a brush and just work on them and rinse really well.......the best way to get the water out of them is to suck it out with a shop vac, leave them out in the sun for about an hour and they are dry
