how do you clean your radiator?

My radiator has tons on tiny pebbles and probably more that I can't see. I want to clean it, do I have to take it out to clean it or will just a water hose work?

I'm guessing he means pebbles in the actual radiator fins... and beyond using a toothpick / high pressure water, I have no idea.

God, I hope he doesn't have pebbles IN the coolant system.

Use a high-pressure nozzle, I guess.

well if its pebbles thats stuck between the veins of the radiator, they are actually imbedded in the condensor of the ac system, because thats infront of the radiator. you cant just remove that (with out discharging the system) to clean. you would want to try to carefully try to wash the stones out from the back side, and use a littel pic and hand pic the rest out

fsttyms that is what I am talking about the little veins in from of radiator I didn't know that was the AC condenser though. I did want to clean that because my AC is raspy and loud. So high pressure hose wouldn't work. Can I just spray water on the backside to try and get them to shoot out?

That wouldnt make your AC raspy and loud. its just a surface for air to flow across and take heat away. high pressure kinda would work being carefull (they are just made out of thing aliminium) but the problem is is that the water may push them in further.

you need to find out whats making the noise.

Get a metal clothe hanger, and stretch it out and pick them pebbles out one by one. Take time, but if you love your car time is all worth it

what could be making the AC sound raspy and loud? It doesn't seem to be leaking and there is no visible damage anywhere.

so would there be any benefit to be had from cleaning the pebbles and other debris from the condensor or is it just a waste of time pretty much?

the largest benifit would be better cooling (if there is alot of obstruction) if not its probably really not worthwasting alot of time. you can try washing as much as will come off with a hose though

sorry just had to mention this incase

By Darryl James, eHow Contributor

Instant leaks must be repaired quickly to avoid damage to the engine.
A leak can occur in a radiator in an instant. A car's cooling system is pressurized and the pressure can cause an old, worn rubber hose to pop open and spill coolant out of the cooling system. That pressure can also cause seams in a plastic radiator that are already weak from stress to open. Rocks, dirt and other debris from the road can fly into the radiator and cause punctures. An instant leak in the radiator can instantly cause the radiator to malfunction and allow the engine's temperature to rise to damaging levels. An instant leak must also be repaired quickly, in order to prevent damage to the engine or the car's cooling system.
