Question Hoses going into the '99 OEM air box????

Okay - all you that have a 99 TL. w/ AEM CAI

when you installed your CAI - what did you do with the two hoses
that went through the OEM air box? (if later models have the same air intake system - your input is welcome)

It looks like they one hose is feeding (green fluid) through the air box and the other is taking in the fluid.

So- I currently have the hoses connected without the air box.
Is this a good idea?

What did you all do?

OK I have a 99 TL and asked the same question when I installed my own custom made short ram intake.
The 99 TL and only the 99 TL had a small radiator inside the airbox that would heat incoming air for the engine if the air was too cold. Similar to the way trucks use risers that come off the exhaust manifolds to heat the air.
ANTI-Freeze comes from the engine and goes through the mini airbox radiator to heat incoming air for the engine. There is a small thermostat that opens a flap so air can go past the mini radiator. If the air is already sufficiently warm the flap stays closed and the mini radiator does nothing. When it gets cold it opens up and heats incoming air to make your engine run better and to keep your gas mileage reasonable.

WHAT TO DO:
1) let your car cool off!!! I almost burnt my hands when I tried to take a hose off!!!
2) disconnect the two hoses where they hook into the bottom of the airbox.
3) take the stock airbox out and drain the anti-freeze in it.
4) now you have two hoses that are not connected to the airbox anymore, take one of those hoses off. Doesn't really matter which...
5) now you have 1 hose in there and a nipple where the hose you took off was connected. Connect the remaining hose to the nipple where you took the second hose off and that will complete the loop. Your car won't know that the radiator is gone!!
BEFORE:
nipple and two hoses

Thumbs up Thanks AK_MOBBER

Nice post ! ! It makes sense...

I did exactly as you said. You posting makes me comfortable. I was worried about the fluid getting too hot.
I noticed that the hose got fairly warm after a test run....

But since the radiator is intended to heat the fluid - no worries.
I used the shorter hose.

Thanks again....for clearing that up! No I can enjoy this mod
without worries.....

i know this is kind of an old thread, but i hope to get some answers on it. i am putting in my CAI today and i started the car and quite a bit of the light green fluid came on onto my carport floor from one of the two hoses mentioned in the original post.

once i take the hose off and reconnect it, where do i put more fluid in? i want to top it off just in case i leaked too much out. where do i put more fluid in and what kind of fluid is it? is this all linked to the radiator, or is it a separate compartment?

thanks in advance, everyone

you mean to do this without starting the car, right? just turn the key twice where you can turn on the a/c on, but do not actually start the motor? or start the motor for a few seconds?? thanks

Just open the radiator cap and fill it if the level is low(only if the motor is cold). If its not there check the level in the overflow tank and fill to the cold line (if coolant is cold)
