This may be common knowledge, but it surprised me. The replacement trannies are rebuilt units, not brand new ones. I looked back at my work order for tranny # 2 and #3 and each says rebuilt.

Thumbs up

Okay, whom DO I THANK for this gesture on Honda's PART? I drive a 2001 Accord LX V6 sedan - Firepepper Red.. I live in Toronto, Canada but have not received a letter as of yet.

I only found out today (NOV 4) thanks in part to this site!!! about this update from Honda.

Should I thank those of you in this from who pursued Honda directly?

Our 1999 Odyssey Ex has 45000mi (80000km) and I think the tranny is slipping or something . It is definitely acting differently as compared to new.

Thing is, my 62yo father drives the Ody. I (22/m) drive the V6 Accord solely.

I just wonder, if I get the Honda dealer to change my tranny fluid on shorter intervals than recommended for my car, would that work in my favour if I like to drive my car hard? I only drive hard once I'm actually moving, rarely ever from a standstill.

My dream is to of course ditch my J30A w/4spd auto in favour of a CL-S' J32A + 6spd Manual or 5spd auto.

Thanks for your input.

Fuggedaboutid,

I have read the letter posted on this site but I have never received one myself. I have had to trannys' go and on the second I changed the fluid three times and it still went. If it is one of the faulty units it will go no question. Changing the fluid is easy if you do your own oil. Changing fluids when they are still in good condition is a waste of money, if your fluid looks good then stay with the recommended interval.

Thanks, I agree! I even agree with the part stating "changing good fluids are a waste" even towards engine oil changes.

I just wonder why Honda hasn't realized that even the 5spd autos on your J32A series motors are still doing what some of the 4spd autos from earlier TL's/Accord V6s. The only response I have is, they are using the same supplier of trannies as Chrysler did on their Minivans with the notorious 4spd autos that failed. My dad had his 1994 Ply.Gr voyager 3.8L V6's auto fail on the freeway @ 80000mi @ 70mph, he came to a grinding halt, on the shoulder fortunately Chrysler covered it, no questions asked. We sold that beast with the replacement tranny within 8mths.

I still can't believe that they'd build a performance oriented car i.e. TL/CL esp. Type S with these lousy autos that a lot of ppl complain about. Thankfully, I am happy b/c I only have 200hp + a short intake and axle back exhausts.

Just wanted to say that I got my letter last week regarding the extended tranny waranty on my TL-S. With my luck, the tranny will go just as soon as the warranty expires. I bought a Honda product b/c I thought the car would last me forever and could justify 30 grand if it lasted me several years. Starting to wonder now.

Q: Didn't Acura offer an automatic on the 270hp NSX? Surely they understand that high HP requires strong clutches, etc., etc.

Just got one today. If push comes to shove, I will be checking out the new models coming out...if I like the 2004 TL-S then I will trade it in (hopefully the transmission will be revised) and throw the mods on that.

Highway Transmission Failure

To all people worried about "highway transmission failure":

Your worries about transmissions failing on the highway are valid, but unnecessary. The situation you are worried about is if the transmission suddenly gives out without warning and the car either stops suddenly or spins out of control. This would indeed cause a dangerous situation.

HOWEVER

The problems that the Honda transmissions have been experiencing are NOT of this nature. In every case of a reported transmission failure (including personal experience), the transmission does not die "suddenly." Not once have we heard of someone stranded on the side of the road because their transmissions failed without warning. In every case of a reported transmission failure, there was plenty of forewarning.

From what I gather, the problem is caused by either a metal collar in the transmission not being seated properly, or from metal shavings floating around in the transmission that will cause wear and damage. In either of these cases, you will have plenty of advanced warning that the transmission is failing by either erratic and random shifting or with very hard jerking when switching. The worst case scenario on a highway is that you, at worst, will be unable to shift gears or that the car will jump sporaticly between gears. You can remedy this situation by putting the car into SS, overriding the automatic transmission's tendency to switch gears until you have either arrived at your destination or can safely pull off the road.

The summary of this pposting is that there simply is not a safety hazard that warrants a recall. Honda probably refuses to issue a recall that will cost them BILLIONS just so that the 95%-98% of owners that will never experience a problem will have peace of mind. The only reason they would issue a recall is if there was a true safety hazard that places lives at risk, and even then the issue would be that the settlements from the lawsuits that followed would be greater than the cost of a recall.

SO

STOP *****ING ABOUT A RECALL AND LIVE WITH IT.

kent1146 & others:

You obviously have not heard of my failure:

Or of the open NHTSA investigation against model year 2001-2003 Acura CL and TL cars' automatic transmissions, case number PE02081.

It is a safety problem, period.

FYI... the NHTSA opened an official investigation on the CL/TL tranny failures. Here is the excerpt from the article:

"Opened an investigation into 2001-2003 models of the Acura 3.2 TL and 3.2 CL because of 35 complaints about transmission problems that can cause the cars to quickly lose speed and come to a stop. Two crashes and two injuries were reported. The NHTSA estimates that about 265,000 of the cars are on the road."

If you want to get your voice heard... keep filing complaints through the NHTSA... especially if you had a tranny failure at highway speeds.

Full article is here: http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,...1029872,00.html

Discussion is in this topic.. which is also set to sticky: http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...threadid=50068

I've got a question.

I'm currently considering a used 2002 TL, or potentially leasing a brand new 2003 TL. Does anyone know if the tranny problem has been rectified on the new 2003 models, or does it still have the same defects. This tranny issue is the main thing that is holding me back from trading in my 1.6 EL which has run perfectly for a TL.

TIA.

I've joined the club

Just brought in my 2002 type S with a fried transmission; 21,000 miles. Will take at least two weeks for replacement under warranty. The good news is the dealer gave me a "great" rental car, a Chevy Cavalier with crank windows. Just think when I couldn't open the rear door I actually thought the child lock was on. Then I looked again and noticed only manual locks. Makes me think I'm back in the 60's.

BTW why would anyone manufacture a car with manual everthing and a cd player.

one of the acura service techs as a shop in yonkers and i talked to him. he said they trannies on the tl die like water. and the legend tranny was perfect... lol

i mentioned the recal. he said "are you serious? i have no clue about that"

i dont think acura tells the service guy anything , he seemed very clueless on the tsx and recall on tranny.\

BTW, he had a TL-S in his shop.. LOL
