Hit the rev limiter for the first time

I hit the rev limiter for the first time on my 02 TLS today. I was in SS mode in 2nd gear getting on the highway from an onramp. A jerk of a plumber's van driver wouldn't let me merge into the highway so I decided to floor it. I popped the shifter when it sounded right but I hit the rev limiter about a half second after that. I felt that sickening rat-tat-tat of the fuel cutoff before the SS finally shifted to 3rd.

Pretty cool, but I wouldn't want to do it again

By the way, of course I blew past that junk of a van.

Fuel cut-off...lousy feeling. Feels like the car is lugging. Did it in my old Prelude a few times, doesn't hurt it and it clean out the carbon.

Do you remember what RPM the VTEC kick in?

Fuel cutoff = 7200 rpm
VTEC engagement = 4800 rpm

Definitely above 7000 RPM and under 7500 RPM by my quick glance at the tach.

power-fade: yeh, VTEC kicks in at 4800 RPM. The butterfly valves also open at 3800 RPM, giving you that exhilirating sound of rushing air!

BTW, has anyone noticed that Acura's little "Type-S" featurette on their website claims that the Type S engine redlines at 7800 RPM? The TL/CL engines redline at 6900 while the RSX engine redlines at 7900... what's the deal?

I've hit the limit a few times. Matter of fact I did it just today waxing a GS300 that wanted to run. I was on a mobile call and not really watching the shift and hit the limiter. Even with the mess up I easily beat him. He liked it so much that he even came back for two more beatings. Good thing it was a 3 lane road with no one in front of us.

Anyway, the engine is pulling strong all the way up to the cut off point. I believe that this engine would easily pull to 7500 or more without a limiter.

Rev. Limiter is my Best friend.

I hit cutoff all the, especially in 2nd gear. No Damage. Which is the reason for it. But if you hit just right, just as soon as it off and hit 3rd, You can chirp the tires and the rush is on. Oh man, It's sweet.

GS300 is slower than out TLS and I hit 8000 rpm with my tls but no one believes it. that was when I was going 117mph on 3rd gear. it touched 8000 rpm and cut offs.

Does anyone know of anyone that blew an engine with a stock automatic car? All of the stories I’ve heard of people blowing their engines had manual transmissions where they mis-shifted.

Seotaiji, Do you get a little nervous when your car lets you go past the normal 7200rpm safety cutoff? I’ve hit the rev limiter many times, and it sounds real ugly. I’ve only done it once in 3rd.
