Question High pitch whirr and pause when shifting from reverse to drive

Hey experts -

2 days ago, I started my car in the morning(which is garaged) and I hear this constant, high pitch whir, kind of like when you drive a electrical car. I thought, ok, its a little cold (30 degrees) so maybe when it warms up, it'll go away.

So I pull out of the garage in reverse, stop, then try to shift from reverse to drive. I hit the gas and it stalls for about 1 second as if it was in neutral. Then it engages and I'm able to drive away.

So driving down the highway, the thermostat is about half way, I still hear the high pitch whir.

Is this a sign of a bad transmission?

I've got 97000 miles on it so I've got to replace the timing belt/water pump in the next 2-3 weeks...

Thanks!!

Sounds like you had better get it to the dealer.

Consistently in the morning. I'm about to head out for lunch and I'll see if it happens in warmer weather or when the car is warmed up

thats GREAT news- all the eaiser for the tech to see and diagnose the prob!
You are still under the trans warranty right? 109k miles? 7years+ 9 months since first date of service? Even if a little over, they hook you up

Loaner cars are fun, ask for a TL,,, as your ~wife~ wants a newer car and you want to keep the TL, a good loaner will help you compare.
A week in a TSX is punishment for many TL owners

dont sweat the dealer saying 150 dollar diagnosis fee, that s just a legal issue- once trans is diagnosed they make a warranty work order and proceed no charge to you.
You may get a call saying front or front and right side motor mounts are broken- very common and no one knows until the car is on the lift to see it.
Big discount on labor for doing front mount then- 30 bucks instead of 300
make sure! the part is about 120 for front mount alone

So I ended up having my car towed to the dealership and checked with the Service Representative, who confirmed that my car , if it has a transmission problem, will be covered under warranty

Big thumbs up also they got me a loaner car (2008 TL with Nav!!! Only 2K miles on it) right away so I'll have a nice weekend

yep thats how these cars are- everything is fine..... then one day the trans quits working.
Better that than the motor~
You are going to appreciate your baby even more now-
fresh trans makes it like 1/2 a brand new car, and a seafoam treatment- new set of spark plugs and you have more than 1/2 a brand new car!!!

Wow... I wish I had done my math right, if my 2000 was bought in Aug. of 2000, I am still under warranty, am I not? I only have 102,500 miles...

7 years plus 9 months is the limit- looks like your are still just under time
Is your trans acting up at all? If so proceed to dealer and get it documented
even if they cant find prob now- it helps later
Dont bother them if your trans is fine, and you want one just in case-
it doesnt work that way

Got my car back

Just picked up my 2000 TL this morning.

Wow, what a difference going from a 2008 TL to a 2000 TL.

So they fixed the transmission under warranty, but I forked out 1000 to have the timing belt and water pump changed out and had them replace the engine mounts for just the parts (Since engine was coming out anyway)

We'll have to drive this car hopefully another 2 years until our MDX is paid off then we can get another car!!

Wow did your car have like a delay going from R to D? My car has done that since I got it (almost 2 years now) and the tranny is still going strong I thought it was an issue but it only happens when cold so of course when I brought it to the dealer it worked fine.
