HID question

my ballast are done. better to just replace with a new aftermarket HID kit or just get new aftermarket ballasts and bulbs? I REFUSE to pay $1,000 for headlights.

Who wants a 1000, the dealer?

Just get new ballasts, aftermarket are probably cheaper.

always swap bulbs left to right and see if the problem follows the bulb

If there is moisture inside the plastic lens of the headlight- it will keep blowing ballast until thats resealed

many gen2s are ready for new bulbs, they usually give a pink or purple tint on startup as the death warning

01tl is right. I recently had a light go out. I figured it was the bulb, but tried it on the other side and it worked. That told me it was probably the ballast. I took it out, and it had some damage from the wreck (I bought it rebuilt). The seal around the plug had broken, and moisture (or whatever) had gotten inside and corroded the circuit board - I opened up the box and looked. Some folks try to clean the board and reseal the metal box when that happens, but since I had a broken plug seal, I needed to replace it. I found a used OEM ballast at an auto salvage yard for $100. It's a little corroded on the outside, but it works.

If the color is getting weird, it's probably just the bulb. When the ballasts go bad, I think they just die.

I say you just get the entire kit from HIDextra.com - it's only around $70 I think, bulbs and ballasts.

I got some bulbs from them a few days ago and it looks great!

I mean, these kits last a while, so even if anything - when they do go wrong, you can just buy another one and replace it.

Look at it this way, for $300 - $400 (oem ballasts and bulbs), you can replace them 4-6 times with the kits from HIDextra...

These don't look anything like stock. I'm not even sure how they would mount. Has anyone here actually used one of these kits? And I mean to replace the low-beam stock HID setup we have. I'm sure some have used these to install fog lights, but that's different.

you need the D2R setup.... it comes with the D2R socket, look it up. the only thing you'll have to do is cut the clip on the stock ballast and solder it to your HID kit and you should be good to go.

Here's a diagram of the stock unit.

I still don't see how it would work. You can see how the stock ballast (#7) mounts via three screws to the bottom of the headlight assembly. I don't see how the kit could mount like that. The stock ballast also has a connector on top for the igniter (#10), and it is all housed together behind a cover (#9). The kit is totally different. Since the ballast connectors on the kit are both on the edge, I guess the cover would have to be abandoned in order to get the igniter wire from the ballast mounting location to the bulb.

haha of course you'll have to do your own improv when it comes to mounting, these kits aren't designed for our cars individually. the igniter is part of the ballast in the kit so no worries on that end. you'll probably have to drill a small hole in the housing to get the wiring through. a guy on the cl side did a DIY with 10000k bulbs, but nonetheless it shows you how to hook up an aftermarket kit.

this post is speculation, but this is how i believe it works....

you'll see here..... this is an ultra slim ballast kit, i think the smaller boxes attached to the ballast are the igniters, but on the HIDextra D2R kit, the igniters are integrated i believe.

Not easily. One of the posters above didn't have to install a kit because new bulbs worked, and the other guy had his kit installed by a customizer. There is another post floating around where a guy can't get a power connection from his wiring harness to his kit. If you are comfortable soldering, you might consider doing a DIY. Otherwise, you want to explore other options.

Why do you need a kit? Are you stock ballasts fried?
