HID bulb question

Im looking into buying a pair of HID bulbs since one of mine went out and the other aint so great. Anyway ive been searching and im just wondering why these pair of bulbs from hidextra http://www.hidextra.com/HID+Bulbs/D2...nt+(PAIR).html
is $35 and also from another site i found another pair for $40
http://www.diodedynamics.com/catalog...roducts_id=114

Just wondering whats the difference between these and say kaixen or phillips which run about a $100 a pair.
Im guessing the life of the bulb but my car is already 10 years old and im not sure if im going to have it more than another 3 years if it survives. Anyone have any experience from these bulbs and if it will last a good while

i just ordered a pair of 5000k's myself and they were $35.

this thread will help you out: https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-video-electronics-navigation-22/thread-closed-no-longer-vendor-26aug14-hidextra-com-hid-review-725257/

considering hidextra is a vendor on our site they have nothing but positive feedback from the many users that use them. for $35 you can't beat it and they are just like any other hid bulbs. don't worry about price. its just more accessible to a broader audience and the HID Kit's fly off the site like hotcakes.

if your concerned about the life of the bulbs just go over to the site and click on reviews and you will see the feedback of the many customers that bought from them i.e. bulbs and hid kits

@afstud

Really? I figure since my stock ones been in for 12 years now. Its really holding in.

Question? When did your "lasts 2 months" become a standard for all aftermarket hid's?

Which ones you buy aftermarket? Were they the ones from the vendors on this site? (Xelerate (sp?) or hidextra) because those both have got positive feedback from many members on this site and not much negative iirc.

I know 01tl4tl praises the Kaixen bulbs from Xcelerate (sp?) and he has yet run into any problems.

Maybe you messed with those cheap bulb makers off ebay.

And to those that are looking at this thread that have not changed their bulbs before. Please and so you don't make the mistake I made and buy just a torx 20 screwdriver.

Make sure you buy the tamper security torx 20 screwdriver because a regular will not work. I bought the whole security torx kit from my local auto parts store for $14. It comes with all the torx's (10, 15, 20 etc.) Not bad of a price considering we need to have those in our tool sets.

i've had the same no-name brand $30 8000k bulbs in for three years... my ballast is taking a shit (it's not from the aftermarket bulbs) so i'm installing a 5000k D2R kit from HIDextra as soon as it warms up.

I know kaixens are good, they are also 100 dollars, they are a very good brand. Phillips is probably still better, thats what we have OEM.

So i noticed that, maybe i may not be having a bulb issue but somehting else. When i turn my lights on, they both work and after a while my left light turns off. Im not sure how long till it turns off but is there anyway to check if its the bulb or something else? Should i just switch the bulbs and see what happens?

just so you know dude. i ordered my D2R 5000k bulbs this morning from HIDEXTRA and they just shipped them a few minutes ago. i will probably get them thursday or friday and i will let you know how they are.

if i was you i would go with either:

Excelerate:
http://store.excelerateperformance.c.../i-236446.aspx

or

HIDEXTRA:
http://www.hidextra.com/HID+Bulbs/D2...K+HID+Bulb.htm

take the left bulb and put it in the right bulb ballast and see if the problem does the same thing. if it does then you know its the bulb if it stays lit then you know its the left ballast that's dying out

but i have a feeling its just the bulb but try the above technique i just said.

yeah but i don't think you can find $50 oem hids anywhere at that price range afstud.

i will stick with the hidextra. they might be cheap but i have not heard any negativity from the bulbs on these forums yet

I just installed by bulbs from hidextra and they are great. Wow, I had 150K miles on my original HIDs and I just did one side and turned the lights on. I kid you not, my original HID bulbs looked like a halogen.

Nothing but great things to say about hidextra. Great vendor.

I just briefly looked but it looks like you do need it because there is like a black plastic cover for the light. And you need the torx screwdriver to take it out i think. Take a look for yourself

Yes you need the torx to remove the screw holding the cover on.
A few tips from doing mine.

1) Look carefully at how the old bulb is in the socket. The new one should go in the same way. The pins on the side of the bulb allow it to fit into the socket two ways, make sure you have it going in the right direction. The first one I did I spent 10 minutes trying to get the cover back on until I realized the bulb was in the socket wrong.

2) Do not remove the screw that holds the metal clip which secures the light. If you reach underneath the bulb, the clip unclips.

3) Passenger side - remove the top neck of the wiper fluid spout (one bolt on the left).
Driver side - remove the airbox (two bolts)

And for all the novices - DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS PART OF THE BULB FOR ANY REASON WITH YOUR FINGERS. If you do accidentally, clean it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry competely.
