Question Hey anybody know about polishing Headers & Intake Manifold?

Has anybody done this or do you know how much performence gain you can look for? And how much you think it will cost and where can it be done. Thanx

Try http://www.extrudehone.com

Very expensive and they need your stuff for 2-3 weeks. Can't justify that.

damn those pics are huge for dial up. what's the point of polishing those pieces with the engine cover? i can see if you polish it in the Accord cuz it shows, but in ours it doesn't show.

Polishing your headers wont do anything just make it look better. Same with the intake manifold, only way you can get performance out of that is to maybe match the ports or extrude honing it, still wouldnt be worth it.

Sorry about the size of the pictures, I'll fix it later. 1999TL, I think we are talking about the inside not the outside for looks.

oh shit, i knew that, but when i came back like 10 mins later to see the pics i forgot what i was looking at. extrude honing is expensive as hell. you can do other mods that will gain more performance first.

Extrude hone can provide some decent results, but most ppl are turned off by the price. I don't know the TL's intake manifold too well, but generally japanese cars especially have pretty smooth intake manifolds, and don't gain a whole lot from the extrude hone process. American cars usually have coarser manifolds, for example, the Ford Contour SVT achieved 30 more horses than base simply by having the intake ported and polished, basically extrude honed and a 5 degree job.... The BMW 850i/Ci/CSi, one of the variants, can gain 50 hp by replacing the stock intake with a Dinan extrude honed one, over $3K i think......so even the German's can benefit.

Actually, the same guys who brought you the 3.5 CL Type S, have flow benched the J32A1 intake manifold and said it was quite a choker (bad thing, it flows poorly), and that it would be recommended to replace it if planning on doing major internal work (N/A), such as valves, valve springs, pistons, cams etc...

Its not terrible... I talked to a pontiac grand am fellow and he polished the top half of his intake mani, and his exhaust mani for $600 total, and gained 12-15 peak horses, not too shabby IMO, but I think prices may have gone up since then...

You'd have to get a quote and see.

Come to think of it.....the Jap intake manifold info may have been based more on 4-cylinders...Well, the point is, there are a lot of gains to be realized from extrude honing, and I really don't think the cost is that bad, especially considering the labor on the owners part is minimal. Looking at the prices on the extrude hone site, it is cheaper than I remembered, then again you'd be w/o a car for a bit. Good thing I have a backup

You can do this yourself, fellas. Buy a Dremmel tool and spend a day doing the job. make all manifold holes matchthe size of the respective plumbing (porting), then polish all the internal plumbing. Just be careful to not rupture and water jackets in the process.

Its not that expensive. It depends on where you get it done. It can give a pretty significant gain... that and get it JetHot coated so it will resist temps from the engine block... http://www.jet-hot.com/

Supposedly 10-15% gain for port/polish.
