Help on trade in value

My dealer offered a new 02 regular TL with spoiler and mud flaps for $29,250. I live in the Phila Pa area. The price was a little high but workable. He then offered me $12,500 for my Outback Lmt. with low mileage in very good condition. The car was appraised by the service manager. I thought it was really low. All values I've seen are at around $14,000. After much discussions he began saying he had a book and he was willing to show me that it was a fair price. I left in a huff.
Now for my question. I remember reading a post several weeks ago that stated Acura dealers use a different book to get values and that it is on the low side. Does anyone remember reading this or does anyone have any general information on Acura dealers and trade in methods.
As an aside. I really wanted the TL-S but they weanted $32,200 and they were not going to budge.

This did not include navigation. It had a spoiler, mud flaps and a gold trim package.
The car I'm trading is a 97 Outback.
I also found the post. It deals with the black book price. Thats what the dealer will give as a trade and what he will have to put in the car to re-sell. Usually 10% less than the other book values.

And just tell the dealer, "I think this is a fair asking price for my trade, if you want to insult me with that low of an offer i'll take my business elsewhere ---w alk hout but do it classily"
I used to have a 97 Outback Limited for my wife and I was once offered $8800 on a trade. What a joke!! We ended up getting about $12000 for it in October 2000. It had 55000 miles on it at the time. My boss has a copy of the black book for the Tampa area and it had the Outback listed for around $11500. Of course that's in Florida where AWD doesn't mean anything. I tink $12500 is an absolutely fair price. If you add a little to the price you were quoted for the TL you could get a Type-S which I feel is worth the money also. Just my 2 cents...

Go to http://www.kellybluebook.com I look in edmunds and the price was a lot lower than kelly blue book and I believe edmunds is what the dealer is using.

Check out townhall.edmunds.com and look under their "Acura TL Shopping" section. There are various folks that paid around $27500-$27800 for new 2002 TL-Premium w/o Nav, so keep it in mind with your bartering. Also, some folks were faxing their offers to many dealers in the area, and most often a dealer would come back and accept the offer that was given to them.
You're on the east coast, so I would even consider looking a little bit outside of your area. With the cash you save, it might be worth it to make your way over there and spend a nice drive back home with your new car.

You will always do better if you take the time and energy to sell your car instead of trade. The dealers always want to give you wholesale for yours and charge retail for theirs.I had a 94 forerunner that I tried to trade in atleast 2 diff. dealerships. They offered me $5500!! I managed to get them up to about $7500, however I knew I could get more for it if I tried. I ran an ad in the local paper and autotrader with good results. Wound up getting $11,000 for it which was a fair price for all involved.Definitely worth the wait and lil effort. FYI Last week I bought my 2002 tl S-TYPE NON-NAV for $30,100 + TAX.
