Thumbs up Help With S Type 2002 And 2003

I want to buy a TL S Type 2002 or 2003. I only want Black on Black, now I am new to this board and was wondering what the diffrence between the two years are?

The dealer says there is no diffrence, but I dont buy it.

I cant believe Acura wouldnt change anything.

I figured the 2003 would be a better bet, because acura would have correct any problems the 2002 would have encountered.

Also, The dealer says I can buy a bumber to bumper 100k mile warranty for $930 on any cerifitifed pre owned type s. It sounds worth it to me, what are your thoughts.

And, does anyone know how much a factory spolier is installed?

Lastly, should I not wait to find a type S with navi, is it overrated?

Thanks in advance!

EZY

The door leather in the 03 is perforated, and the 03 with Navi has OnStar, but everything else is identical.

Yes the extended warranty is worth it.

The Navi is cool, but it isn't a must, at least for me. I want it with my next car, but the 2nd Gen navi's screen is small.. 3rd gen is much better.

You'll like the Type-S though!

Thumbs up Wow

That reply took 10 mins! WOW! Thanks for the quickness!

I was still online reading on this forum, this excact question has been asked before I see.

I will go with the purchase.

I let a loaded black on black with spolier slip away with only 39k (Cert Pre owned) they sold it for $22k, and I could have got it for $21k, it was a steal but the dealer only wanted to do a lease for some reason. Oh well, another will come along.

If anyone knows how much a factory installed spolier should be let me know so I have an idea of what to pay.

Its seems Type S cars in florida lack the spolier.

Thanks again!

They'll try $599 or $699 but don't pay that. Try to get them to include it (worked for my 05 Accord coupe purchase), but if not make sure you pay cost rather than retail.

Yeah, you shouldn't pay too much for the spoiler. I got mine for $300 flat when i got my car.

Very good deal on the 100k warranty too.

On the Navi unit... if you plan to do some serious mods, you can get your own navigation system and have it already being able to play dvds or mp3's and the like. And your screen will be bigger too. So if you want to mod your car video wise, you're better off not getting one with the navi unit. On the plus side I think the screen is a decent size and still bigger than the same year mercedes screens (don't know about the new ones) and hell the navi works great.

Lastly, get the type S!

'02 and '03 Type-S models do have some slight differences, but nothing major. For example, the OBDII data port is located underneath the steering column on the '03, but underneath the coin tray on the '02, and and... and... that's really about it.

Nothing an ordinary person would ever notice.

Thumbs up White 2003's

I have found 5 S types (2003) models in the Ft lauderdale area from Acura dealers, but no black ones yet. I will wait for one to come along.

I am leaning towards the 2003 because they have less miles, but the 2002's seem to be $3000 less in most cases.

I need to replace the head unit for sure, I have been reading on here that CD-Rs wont play in the stock changer. I wonder how hard or weird the dash would look with a JVC head unit in that large space?

Has anyone got any pictures of a aftermarket head unit they could share?

Thanks

Eh?

My Bose disc changer in my 02 plays burned CDs and CD-RWs, and I've never heard anyone complain of the 02-03 disc changer. Only the ones before that had problems. Keep the stock headunit!

And I think the Bose system sounds really good, but lots will disagree.

I'm thinking about changing out the stock headunit too. I saw some pictures of a setup awhile ago, where they had an in-dash flip-up headunit w/ a screen (navi compatible), and below that, was a regular cd player headunit. with both units, it helped take up a lot of space, and all the extra space in between was filled in w/ black plastic like in the stock console.

The dealer warranty cost is $650, if you try hard enought they will sell it to you for $650. That is what I paid for mine for a Certified Used Car. They need to meet certain warranty sales #'s every month, and if they see that you won't buy it, they rather sell it to you for thier cost then not sell it at all.

This is good too know!! I will get the price down, is the deal really 100k bumper to bumper?? its hard to believe. I know its 100k powertrain on certified, but bumper to bumper is awesome!

I just purchased my 02 Tl type S about 3 months ago I live in Ft Lauderdale (plantation) I looked everywhere down here for one that I liked and that fit in my budget after weeks of searching I grew tired of all the local dealers i found budget Car sales in dallas they are doing a pilot program selling off lease luxuary cars for a good price while all there prices are pretty much set in stone they are better then almost anyone else. I was kinda worried about buying a car without seeing it but after haveing a outside company inspect the car I felt better and there were no suprises other then it being in better condition then I could have even hoped for. If you want any other information from me please feel free to PM me.

Dont forget the upgraded coin tray holder No more change stuck in the back.

Besides the obvious stuff, as with any car, models produced later on do get the benefit of tweaks, and fixes corrected from the earlier production models. The common saying is that its not ideal to get a brand new model when it first comes out. Allows them time to tweak minor bugs, etc.

Having said all that, with a 3k difference, and a new model out which means the resale difference between an 02 and and 03 will be minimal if you want to selll or trade it in later, I'd say go with the best condition car at the best deal you can get.

the CD-R problem is only with the 99-00 acuras.....my 02 type s plays cd-r perjectly....even ones that arent in perfect of shapes too.

But if you want to play mp3's then get a new headunit.....personally i like the stock look.

Cool

Hey ez, I was lookin at your post since you were considering an 02 or 03. Thought I'd share a little insight on the subject. I searched for my TL for about 2-3 months before finally finding my perfect one. Like you, I specifically wanted black on black, but I was even pickier and insisted on Type-S with Navi. Trust me, I really did search. Every single day, all day long, near and far. I pretty much get to be online much of my workday, and that was before I had discovered this other realm known as Acurazine, so I would search every single website imaginable all day long. Right off work, I didn't go home, I went searching. Drove all over to look at different ones. I'm very anal when it comes to my car. The dealers used the word "meticulous" every time, lol. ANYWAYS, the only difference between the 2 years that is worth mentioning, is the Onstar. As mentioned before, there's also the cointray (which I've never had a problem with), and the perforated leather on the doors (...okay, who thought of that life-altering improvement? ). Now, the only way you can tell them apart is the little fin on top for the Onstar (most people prefer it without that for a cleaner, smoother look. there's even a mod to remove that from the 03's, lol). Plus, 03 owners tell me that they wish they had bought the 02 because they wouldn't have had the Onstar fin (which, by the way, they all said they dont use the Onstar), and they would've paid less. Not to mention that the warranty for the tranny on the 02 was extended to 100k miles for free (which I also haven't had any problems with ). I am super-happy about my choice on black-on-black. I can't explain how glad I am that I bought the Type-S and didn't settle for regular, lol. And when it comes to the Navi, GET IT!!! I use it all day every day. I LOVE my Navi. Not only because it impresses everyone that rides in my car (and those that aren't allowed in my car also, lol), but because of how useful it is, it's just great. People with Navi usually say they didn't need it or want it (there are those that still regret buyin it without navi and wish they did or try to buy it off ebay and add it on) but I guess when you get it, you just wonder how you ever had a car without it. SO, my recommendation would be to get what YOU truly want. If you haven't made up your mind, keep researching. Whatever you do, don't break down and buy something just because you got tired of looking. Patience will bring you true happiness. Okay, now that's all sounding really :ghey: , hahaha. Naw, but seriously, have fun and don't worry, you'll find the TL for you! Lemme know what you end up getting! Oh, and welcome to AZ !

Oh my god!!! Finally, I am not alone out there. Like you I want the Navi, but I figured the only way to find what I want is to but a brand new TL and customize it the way I want. At this point I cant even find a 02-03 TLS Black on Black w/o Navi!!! I found tons of white TL-S's, they 2 Black ones I found have Tan Interior. ( I live in Ft Lauderdale, FL ) and should get tan, but it gets too dirty too fast. ( All interiors in Fl are hot as hell) thats what A/C is for.

Where did you end up finding your 02 Black on Black TL-S , can you please email some pics of it to me? (ezyproductions@yahoo.com)

What Fin are you talking about?? the little black antenna on the rear roof?? I like that look, I am surpirsesd people hate it. I though the antenna was for NAVI not onstar.

I will only buy my car cerified from an Acura dealer (is that the way you did it?)

I have every Acura dealer on the lookout, and also have a guy through my credit union looking, he gets paid when he finds me a Black on Black 03 TL-S, maybe I should tell him to look for 02's too.

thanks man!''

lol, yeah i bought mine with everything i wanted and continued from there. I also hated the "parchment" interior. I bought mine from a well-known dealer here in the sacramento area. that's cool that u like the Onstar fin, i wouldnt say people hate it, some people just prefer not to have it. Yeah mine was certified. ...and I bought mine for $4k less than their sticker price. yeah i had all the dealers "searching" for me, too. I'm just the type to like to do the searching myself. no one's going to put in the effort that the buyer would put in himself if the buyer is very serious (or at least as serious as i was). oh, and you're welcome. dont worry about emailing you pics of my ride...

I would think black would get dirtiest quicker than parchment? My 02 TL has a black interior and I'm constantly worrying about wear on it, especially after I get in it when it's been sitting in the sun. Today I started it (it had been sitting in the sun) and the outside temp gauge immediately said 97. The interior was fiery hot, and stuff had a "soft" feeling to it that it doesn't normally - and it takes forever to cool! I wish I had parchment interior, but I had to go black to have Anthracite - the BEST TL color, IMO

...i would never think of owning a nice car like this without tinting all the windows ASAP.

besides looks, it also keeps your car cooler inside, helps deter break-ins by not leaving everything clearly in plain sight, DEFINITELY helps extend the life and condition of your leather, AND even has UV protection (at least my Llumar with lifetime warranty does )

I also agree with what someone else said DONT Settle it took me a long time to find the one i wanted. I wanted only WDP on black ( the rarest combo ) had to have body kit spoiler and wanted to wood steering wheel and wood package the only reason nav was not that big for me is because I already have an eclipse double din that I am going to put in that has nav so i thought it would be redundent.. Good luck with your search..

Mafi, nice pic! did you find yours with a spolier? thats another problem I run into. Not a big deal, I will make the dealer install it for a nice price, someone on this chat said to do $300. That sounds nice to me.

I am getting discouraged, I guess I shouldnt though! I am very impatient, and want my car yesterday! My Girlfriend cant wait for the heated seats, and shes all fired up about the Navi system. (Uh Oh)

The Acura dealer has a White with Black interior now, I wish I wanted white.

All my cars have always been black. I like the look with the tint on black.

Glad you found your car you wanted.

Keep posting the pics!

I have a 99TL and it doesn't play CD-R so I tried using my Panasonic CD/MP3 player (SL-CT710). I connected the player using a tape adapter and I was amazed that the sound quality is really good. I'll try connecting using a wireless FM transmitter and see if I can get the same quality.

I am getting discouraged, I guess I shouldnt though! I am very impatient, and want my car yesterday! My Girlfriend cant wait for the heated seats, and shes all fired up about the Navi system. (Uh Oh)

I found a Black on Black 2002 TL-S with Navi, however it has 71k, and I need a warranty.

Should I wait?? Or can Acura add the 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty to this car? Or is that only avail for certified cars?

DAMN! nice pics!! thanks! i noticed on some TL-s models that the stock 17" are shiny and some are regular alloys?

yours seem to have the shiny in one pic, but regular in the others? how long after you bought it did you add the spolier?

Those are what the factory rims look like dipped in chrome. It is really a nice touch if you don't want to get new rims or change the size.

btw, looks hot quad150db!

...personally, nothin' wrong with 71k if its got everything you want (after Carfax and a VERY extensive review of the vehicle and plenty of test drives ). but, if you truly prefer a vehicle with significantly less miles (which, of course you know, will cost you a few more thousands) then I say WAIT. contrary to what some pessimists may say, a TL with 71k still has many years and miles left of great life. i dont know how long you plan on owning yours before selling, but i know i plan on having mine way past 200k (i wish i'd never have to let it go ).

OH yeah, and about the head unit, the 02's have no problem whatsoever with burned discs. just dont try to put in a burn with a full-cover sticker label on it. you'll either have trouble putting it in, or you wont be able to get it out, usually. but that's no big deal anyway, why use those tacky labels anyway, right? (just use a sharpie to label your burned discs!) i personally use almost nothing but burned copies in my car, they're all backups of my originals which i keep at home. I decided to keep my stock Bose head unit, i'm completely satisfied with it. BUT i DID get more beat (sorry, I had to brag). I got 2 12" Alpine Type-S subwoofers in seperate boxes (to keep my pass-thru to my trunk), JL amp (sorry, dont remember the exact specs on the amp at the moment, but its the good & powerful one, it HITS), AND what the heck, added a Sony 10-disc CD changer with remote wired in the center console. Oh yeah, and a on/off switch for my amp installed in my dash (COP switch). Yes, that's right, i added all that and decided to KEEP my head unit, I also kept all my interior Bose speakers stock (they provide good enough highs to provide a goo sound ratio to my lows). the car kept it's classy luxurious stock look inside, but when i flip a switch, you get BLOWN away and can feel the hairs inside your nose vibrating (hahaha, gotta love that!). it's funny when people find out that i have a 6-disc changer in my dash AND a 10-disc in my trunk. I keep about 120 CD's in my center console, mostly all backups of my originals (i NEVER run out of music to play, who needs satellite radio? lol ) but anyway, besides the fact that you can hear me on the other side of town, just wanted to let you know that replacing your head unit is not exactly necessary and that it wont have any problem with burns. thanks, i'm glad i found mine and i hope you find yours (TL stands for True Love ). keep me updated bro!

thanks man, i think i am going to wait, i want a certified acura, i am leary of Mike used autos! they get their cars from auctions and repos, where as acura usally only gets grandmas and buisness mens lease returns. these folks seem to take care of cars, and acura wont back it anyway if its junk.

also, i asked about the 100k mile warranty from ac ura care, and the dealer said acura usally says no to covering problems, i will have to do so homework on that becauce i think hes full of crap.

what do you think the odds are a black on black navi will pop up here in fla? i am looking for only 03's at this point, trying to get myself to search for and 02 like yourself.

i need to be patient, because i will end up buying a new tl custom the way i want it.

i was wondering, can i have the rear break light in the window work, the same time the spolier light is on? i noticed the dealer disconnects the rear window light on spoiler Tl's, why is that?
