Help- cleaning out shift position sensor
Hey guys,
I spilled a drink in the center console a few months ago and ever since then I get random CELs. They are always p1709, which is a malfunction in the sensor that determines the position of the shifter. I can usually just disconnect the battery and reset the ecu to make it go away. The cel came on again sunday now accompanied by the TCS and flashing D5 lights. The car is now in limp mode (no vtec/ss) and resetting the ecu is not working. Im looking for help with locating this sensor and the best method to clean it. You can refer to this thread for a similar situation/more info:

thanks in advance

You may have 2 seperate probs. I had similar symptoms on my 2001 TL
You can remove the console around the shifter and spray electrical contact cleaner- not wd, on the 3 micro electric thingos there.
The other prob could be actual transmission failure which is covered under warranty till
109 thousand miles for us.
Get it in the dealer for another check of the trans.
The flashing D5 is a major concern
The no SS mode can just be the electrics. Dealer wanted 700 to replace mine when they did the trans. I said to wait and just give me the free trans. Tech shot some cleaner in there for me and its been fine since
Good luck

The transmission has already been replaced not too long ago, and the only code its coming up with is p1709, so I really hope that its not going again. Where are the electric contacts located in relation to the actual shifter?

left side of shift gate has 3 sets of small totally exposed to the elements micro processer size wire connectors and switches that face down. Spray liberally while moving thru selector positions
You need to take off a few small panels to really get at them good, but some spray via tube everywhere in that general direction may fix you up
Good Luck
And just because its a new trans does not mean it cant fail- some have been doing that recently, like a bad set of parts or maybe labor probs affected the product
Have it checked after this fix

Your replacement trans has its own warranty in case thats the prob
If SS worked before the spill- this should be the trick

If you are still under 109 they should honor the main trans warranty- especially on replacement unit. Honda is generous if you ask nicely
