Heads up display for a 2001 TL?

I recently bought a heads-up display for my son's 2001 TL. I found out after we got it that it only works on cars that are 2003 and newer. Does anyone know if there is a heads-up display that can work with a 2001 vehicle? Some of the product descriptions said 2001 and newer would work but the descriptions were wrong. My son was so excited when he got this birthday present and I'm really sad for him that it didn't work. Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to answer this question.

Thank you for asking, Iggy. This is the model (but it's only for 2003 and newer):

That unit will definately work. It gets the information from the OBDII port which is located behind a little plastic piece below the ash/coin tray.

With the engine OFF, you have to put the car in Drive to make room for hand- to remove the cover on the OBDI port

"A" is where the port is. Pretend "B" is the HUD unit.

As I mentioned earlier, that unit should work just fine. Just know that these cars have a slower data stream than newer cars so there may be a lag in the info displayed.
For example, during acceleration the HUD speed display won't be as "fluid" as the speedometer in the dash.

Also, for a cleaner install, with some finesse, you can fish the HUD wire up through and behind the side panel where the gas pedal is with a coat hangar that has bend on the end.

Enjoy
