headlight bulb blow up

Hi Guys,

I passanger side HID bulb blow up (2001 TL). I pulled out today and found out the glass tube only has a small piece left at the base and another small piece hang by the electrode. How do I remove the middle piece from the housing? if I replace another bulb in w/o remove the broken glass tube, will I have any problem?

BTW, do I need to watch out for the direction/orientation of the electrode when I replace a new one? I did not pay attention to the orientation when I pulled it out today.

Thanks a bunch.

yes the electrode MUST go in the same way=critical to light output=remove the other one to ck or maybe see thru headlight lens cover

all broken material must be removed
NOTE DISCONNECT BATTERY NEG cable and dont work on lights within a few hours of them being used
system holds high voltage that can kill the unsuspecting
time allows it to bleed off the stored power

IS there mositure behind the housing lens?- very common and will blow bulb AND kills ballast

Any symptoms before failed--purple or pink a minute at startup or flikker or on and off?
That will help diagnose if the prob goes further than just old bulb
most 99-03 are ready for bulbs--they last about 2500 hours for stockers and lose color and brightness with last of life

reminder to all- never touch the bulbs with bare hands- wear latex/vinyl gloves

If you accidentally tough the glass, wipe it off with rubbing alchohol on paper towel

There is oil in your fingers that cause hot spot when baked onto the glass, and reduces its life by a large number of hours

I did not see any moisture in the housing and did not notice any problems before it's dead. When you said to check the electrode orientation in the other headlight; do I need to match it or mirror image it?

Thanks
