hard time chroming out shift plate
hi
im trying to chrome out my shift plate (yes i have a 99) and i have a ****ing hard time taking off the silver paint with that graffiti remover stuff i got. i red here that it took like 30sec to remove the paint well it does not lol
it's be sitting there for like 20mins and the paint comes off like ****ing slow and only on the side and on the inside of the shift pattern.. not on the top of the plate.
wish i can get that paint off...

it will come off! let it soak!
i have done 4 of them and for some reason the electrostatic sealant comes off easier on some than others. let it sit, totally submerged in that remover overnight! it should come off very easily the next day! good luck.

Just went to home depot today and got chromed out with the graffiti remover. Took a little patience with a few nooks but it's worth it (even though my skin is feeling like its about to peel off after scraping the paint away with my nails)

I too have a 99 and was wondering how hard it is to get the shift plate off. I agree that this has to be the easiest mod but without instructions, I would not want to #$%^ up my ride.
Thanks fellas,

1)remove the shift knob (blue arrow) by turning it counter clock wise. (just turn it, you won't break anything)
2)stick a flat head screw driver or your nail on the edge(red arrow) and pull that piece out.
Now it should look like the following
3) This is the hardest part, either pull the shift plate to one side and pull it up. Or stick something in where the green arrows are (work on one side) and push the shift plate up.
4) dip the shift plate in paint remover.
5) *optional* clean area before putting the chrome shift plate back
6) put everything back and enjoy a beer

Take about 2 minutes to take off the shift gate... About 30 minutes to soak the gate in the remover stuff (dont stare at the gate while soaking it , go and clean up the shift gate area ) and 10 minutes to take off the paint. Wear rubber glove and remove it in warm soap water and a sponge (if you care saving your skin) .....

What kind of remover did you use.

This is only for the 99TL. When the 99 TL went into production, Acura had the chrome shift plate but they decided against it because they figure people will have glare issues (which is somewhat true) So they painted over it, while the 00-03+, the shift plate is mold sliver plastic. Any paint remover will work after you soak it.

caution about chroming
seeing the chromed out shift plates looked amazing. so i wanted to try it out myself.
uncorked the shift knob, the shift plate and shift plate border....
i used the (made in canada-type) graffiti remover and i left it on for about 3 minutes, thinking that it was a weaker version of what you can get at home depot. I wiped it down with a paper towel and I'm assuming that I left it on too long because I wiped off ALOT of gray matter and I also think I wiped off the chrome paint underneath the first layer.
now i've got a super dull gray shit plate

you don't think so?
i really hope not.
ok, so instead of spraying my gate shifter with graffiti remover which i did numerous times ...I submersed it into the solution; emptying out half the spray bottle.
i just don't want to see melted plastic when i bring it up from that scary liquid.
