GPS Dash Mount - Any Clever Ideas ?

Hi All :

I received a Nokia 500 GPS unit for Christmas and I was wondering if anyone has come up with a creative way to mount this type of unit ? I really don't want to use the gigantic (stupid) suction cup mount it comes with as it looks totally ridiculous.

Anyone know of a third party mount that works ?

Thanks to all who reply !!

hardwire it into the car and run the wires up near your rearview mirrow. check the DIY section to see how others did their radar/laser detector.

you can get a fabric-rice filled bag that will sit on the dash and hold the gps
Or one that mounts to the seat bolts and comes up by the radio

having it reachable and not blocking your view are the key points on mounting

In Ca they just started a law- gps mounted on lower far right or left lower corner of windshield,
and NOT under the mirror where it makes it very hard to see whats in front of you in a corner

Hey if you still have your stock radio then this will work. This is what i did. I removed the suction part of the mount and i took a cassette and mounted the gps part of the mount on the cassette. So in the pic below, you would unscrew the one in red and put the suction part aside. Then you make a hole through the cassette and screw the other part on there. Once its nice a tight (not too tight or the cassette might break) Just slide it into your cassette player and voila! Your gps is mounted in an ideal location where you dont have to reach up to your dash to work with it and you dont have wired dangling either. Lemme know if you dont understand and i'll try and post some pics.

Ehhh I'lll post a pic anyway.

It looks like the cassette won't fit in between the the little plastic thingys where the screw goes through in your Nokia 500, so just mount it either on top or bottom of it.

Just do what I did for my Garmin. Get a vent mount clip. I just put it right beside the clock on the drivers side and whenever I want to use it, I just clip it on and I'm good to go.

I find it to be the perfect location because it doesn't block anything at all (except the relatively small vent on that side of the dash), it's in a great place to look while driving, and it's low enough that other people can't easily see that I have a GPS unit in the car.

Ebay is full of 'em. I dunno about your particular model, but for mine and several others I've won for friends I got 'em for 1 cent each and shipping was about 7 or so dollars. Can't go wrong with that.

I use my in dash CD Tray. I took out everything in it and put a strip of velcro in it and another on the bottom of my gps unit. Whenever I need to use the gps i just pop out the CD holder and stick the GPS onto it. I can take a picture later so u see what I mean.

I have a metal plate that is between the gap of the dash and plastic. I have it secured with screws behind the dashboard and it's mounted there. I'll try to take a picture tonight and post it tonight.

I used velcro strips w/ adhesive to attach my GPS to the removable card/junk tray above the radio unit. I originally planned to remove the GPS via the velcro when I wanted to take the GPS off the dash (to hide it or to put in CD's), but I'm finding it's just as easy to remove the whole tray.

It's worked out great for me so far.

Kind of low.
Honestly, the best for driving is up on the windshield so your eyes stay up on the road...

For me , the position I like the best is the lower left hand corner of the windshield . I find this to be the best position to keep eye on road / eye on Garmin . But , I hate that @#$& suction cup. Keeps falling off . In viewing the pics with velcro with sticky back , this might be an idea as long as the sticky side stays stuck. Not sure I would like diverting my eye away from the windshield to look down . Anybody who might not mind this , might want to take a look at this:

thats a cool idea i might do they get velcro strips and put it above the stock radio in that little tray. I'll mess with it 2morrow to see if i can think of anything else.

Since in CA you cant have it in the middle of your windshield anymore you have to have it on the passenger lower corner or drivers. dumb law including that no texting while driving.

Not sure if Nokia makes a similar dash mount, or if it would fit the one designed for the Garmin, but I love my friction mount. It is a bag filled with something heavy (small ball bearings or something) with the mounting apparatus on top. It has never budged, despite hard turns, sudden stops, etc. When not in use, I slide it under my seat so it's out of view to not clue any would be thiefs that I have a GPS unit.

Here is the one I have:

That is an interesting idea. Where on your dash does the friction mount sit? I have both my XM Skyfi2 and my phone (using a Proclips holder) mounted to my windshield with suction cups and they always fall off. I don't like clipping stuff to my vents because I have had problems in the past with them scratching the vents and blocking the air flow. Proclips makes a nice solution that clips to the side of the dash up around the radio that I use for my ipod. So I will be watching this thread alot for solutions to my suction cup problem as well.
