got rear ended :(

Hey guys,

Ive been on the forums for a couple of years now, and have modded up my car a little bit.

Yesterday I was sitting at a red light, and a GMC Sonoma hit me while I was stopped at around 30-35 mph. My neck, shoulder, head all hurt like hell. No airbags or anything.

The guy was 23, a yr older than me. He was rlly nice about it however and apologized. I was driving with my bro in the passenger seat, and his gf in the back seat. Everyone's really sore but majorly okay. I'm wondering what u guys think... Insurance hasn't given me a quote or anything yet since it was labor day.

Damn bro. Total bummer. Luckily we drive some safe ass cars. Get yourself checked out and make sure you don't have whiplash. My mom got it from being rear ended at 15-20 mph and she still feels some pain in her neck every now and then.

aww man sorry about that.
this happened to me about 2-3 years ago. i was just sitting there stopped at a red light and a guy in a small truck hit me. his air bags went off. my damage was worse then yours. i took mine to a good shop and let me tell you my car's rear end looked brand new! it was a hassle having to deal with insurance and waiting for the car to be fixed. but i did get a decent amount of 'pain and suffering' money. i would also go check if your back/neck is okay. insurance paid for me to see a chiropractor and have a therapeutic massage 2 times a week
good luck with getting the car fixed!

Something similar happened to us a few years back in the 03. Rear ended in bumper to bumper traffic on the highway, hit at about 20 mph, and the damage was primarily to the bumper and the braces behind....Also, the exhaust and the muffler brackets were bent.

thanks for the love guys..

Update: the guys insurance appraised my car today, the lady said its major damage and will probably be totaled... It doesnt look that bad from the pics, but underneath its pretty screwed. Subframe, exhaust, the bumper's reenforcement... all are bent. I will get a rental 2moro. Its such a pain to deal with these guys, they are sooo slow. Every little thing takes like a whole day.

Bummer. Sorry about the car (fixed your pics)

Though i hate when insurance companies total minimal damage like that.

yea Ive seen enough to know that, that is probably not a cheap fix. If you take out the spare tire the trunk has to be all pushed in. It doesnt look like your quarter panel caved in, but since the value of the car dropped so much, I'm not suprised they totaled it out. If they dont give you a good amount for it, get a lawyer, even though you should have one for your pain anyways. A lawyer can get your passengers 5k at least for a few chiro visits.

if the sub frame is damages its gonna be totaled, like where air bags off off on a light bump. check what car dealers are selling these cars for and try to get that much money for ur car if they total it.

man that sucks that they totaled it. an im glad ur ok. my car was almost recently totaled for minor frontal damage. i had to pretty much beg the insurance company not to. im with fsttyms1 on this issue. i don't think insurance companies should total perfectly good cars with minor/semi-minor damage. its wrong, and hella paperwork an stress for every1 for no good reason.

Insurance companies FTL!! All they're good for is takin your money then being d-bags when you file a claim for the first time. I've hardly ever had a good experience with insurance companies..I guess cuz you're the one that's takin money from em.

^ I agree. I don't believe the car is totaled.. Believe me because on my 03TL, I had Damage done and it was 16K total, and they still fixed it and didn't declare totaled...

ok so some updates on my incident. I took it to a reputable body shop and got a quote from him for $8400. He didn't open the car yet but looked from the underside and outside to gimme a ballpark figure. The insurance company gave me a quote of $4700 by doing the same thing and sent me a check in the mail for that amount (I guess theyre hoping ill accept it). After the huge difference in quote amounts, I decided to just give the car to the bodyshop to give me an exact figure so that I can ask the insurance what they wanna do about that.

They wanna put aftermarket and used parts on my car which is why im guessing theyre quote is so much lower than mine. I wasn't at fault so I'm not backing down from getting OEM parts which were already on my car.

finally got a rental from them after 10 days of the accident, its a saturn aura XE. After getting used to my TL-S, this thing handles like piece of crap. Not impressed at all, except for maybe the mileage. Its a 4-cyl, 6 spd auto. It ends up revving the same amount on the highway as the TL-S. Gotta admit its fun to mess with the paddle shifters though.

8400 y didnt the insurance total the car? settle for nothing less than new oem parts. but that damage does not look to be 8400. take it to more shops. take it somewhere to a body shop that the insurance does business with.

if you take it to one of the shops that they do business with on a regular basis then it will defineltly proably not be fix right cause remember there is a reason that they do business with them alot cause there CHEAP and you geneally get what you pay for...

every1 keeps saying its gna be so cheap, so I took it to another shop in the area got a quote of $7800. I don't think u guys realize the damage under the bumper and underneath the car (Can't be seen in the pics). Its def not gna be as cheap as 1500.....think about it, even the insurance quoted me $4900 and they always try to lowball u.

As soon as any updates come Ill let u guys know.

Thanks,
Ace

Do this, take the car to a few shops (5or so) get a WRITTEN estimate for the repair, go in person to ur insurance agency and show them the check that they sent u and what shops quoted u. Either demand more money for the repairs or tell the insurance to find u a shop to fic it for 4700.

If he feels that this is too much work for 4k, i guess something wrong. Not much work at all for that amount of money.

If their insurance company is paying for the car to get repaired, take it to the most reputable place you can find. Either way, it's not coming out of your pocket.
Either way, the insurance company should be able to guarantee the repairs for as long as you own the car. So if you even have any water leaks, wind noises that weren't there before, rust forming, paint issues etc, the insurance will have to pay to get it fixed again.
Like you said, make sure you get OEM parts, don't accept aftermarket. But if it comes down to it, I'd recommend a used oem part vs a new aftermarket, in terms of fitment.
I also suggest you don't try taking a check (even if you think you can get it fixed for a few hundred bucks less somewhere else on your own) and fixing it at a shop for cheaper and pocketing some cash.
What happens with these types of hits is that there is a lot of hidden damage, sometimes it wont be until the car is completely torn down that the tech will notice all of it. When this happens, the shop is still able to charge the insurance to fix the new found damage, or replace parts that they didn't find damaged during the initial estimate.
It looks like the rear body and floor got crumpled pretty good, with a repair like that, I think it may be less stress/hassle for you to just have their insurance pay for the repair and let them deal with it. Just remember YOU have a choice of where you want the car repaired and you don't have to accept it until you're ok with the repair.
