Got My Megans Installed Today

so the local mechanic put em in. charged me $130. not a bad deal to me. i would have loved to do it myself but it just looked so much easier to do with a lift. but anyways....the mechanic said there were no fitment issues but the hanger by the flex pipe was welded on in the wrong direction. no biggie. he said there were no leaks when he fired it up. he also said that he's seen alot more megan products around lately and that they seemed to be pretty high quality.

my first impressions: no leaks on startup for me, slight resonance at idle but it went away almost immediately when i put the car in drive. i had slight resonance once during acceleration, but it ended quickly. went to a gas station and filled up. once i restarted the car i never heard any resonation for the next 2 miles to my house. unfortunately it's been raining all day here so i couldn't open her up but the little i did made it clear that i have something under the hood since i could hear the hissing sounds of the exhaust flow.

at normal speeds around town though the sound is nearly stock and i like it that way. quiet for cruising and throaty when you want it to be.

i'll be heading to the dyno friday. i will be sure to let you know all what happens.

How about doing a combination of headers and a UR crank pulley?

Meagan + UR = x
Alphawerks + UR = x+
Comptech + UR = x++

well i can definitely feel the power allready. i was able to open her up a few times today, but i have some resonance at 1800-2000 rpms now and i have to check on that hanger underneath because i think i car hear it hitting something in park while idling. otherwise they're pretty quiet. no complaints really yet.

do you feel the power shifts up north now?

i feel i kinda lost some low end torque after i installed my headers

but sure it pulls at high end now

you didnt.

in fact, you gained some (except at one place in the powerband) (according to comptech'S dyno)

it prolly feels slower off the line cuz it's faster than it used to be at high rpms... just a feeling.

well, i may have lost a tad down low, but it pulls so much harder now from mid to high that it probably shouldn't matter. i actually haven't had the opportunity to do any straight line racing with it to really see.

i won't REALLY know until i get my dyno done. my stock dyno said 209ft/lbs at 2275 (IIRC) i have to go back and read my other post again, but regardless i am waiting to see if the torque peak moves up towards 3000 or what it does.

i will say though, that they seemed MUCH quieter today (my headers that is). much more like the stock setup. doesn't bother me a bit but i just find it interesting. i wonder if the metal is finally breaking in from all the expansion and contraction. plus i just want to make a comment about how freakin heavy the stock manifolds and pipe are. i imagine the weight loss alone should help you compensate for a slight loss in torque.

Anyone know if the stock heat shield will be able to cover the Megan Headers up? I'm planning to hide them during the visual check during the smog test . Also, I heard these pass the smog test.... but what if I got CAI and Headers? Will it pass then?

I got mine a V6P too... couldn't pass up on the deal.

edit: i'm in no way working for megan or any shop that sells these items, strictly buying from groupbuys and pointing to other members of great deals on a great performance mod

im really feening for headers too most non-comptech brands have all different batches where improvements have been made, how can we go about telling if a vendor or ebay seller has the most recent? if you ask most likely they will just assume its the latest batch.

well i you can see my setup in the first post on my sig (i will include my sig in this post too). nothing special, as you can see, just an AEM V1 and the meagans.

keepingitclean - unfortunately it has been crazy humid all week here in NY. it's been raining since tuesday a little bit every day. today is a little nicer, but it's supposed to get crappy in the afternoon so hopefully i can get there by 4 today. we shall see.

OK, so my weekend got messed up from the holiday so i never got to do another dyno. hopefully this saturday i will get to it.

on another note, the 'hissing' sounds i thought i heard is really resonance. i really paid attention to it today and then reved the engine in idle (park/neutral) to compare. i am definitely hearing vibration and *hard* rubbing around 2k RPMs. the rubbing only last for a split second, but the resonance is whenever i give the car gas. it's quiet at cruising speed for the most part.

do you guys think this qualifies as a fitment issue covered by megan? does anyone think i should just buy another downpipe?

just looking for thoughts. thanks.

Well, I have a set of the new batch and the resonance is awful. Had them taken off and reinstalled by a dealership and it still has crazy resonance. But there are no leaks now with the new batch.

Have you tried adding some type of damping material to the downpipe to reduce the resonance? Maybe try wrapping part of the downpipe with those exhaust repair kits. Just an idea.

I am really trying to understand what this resonance that people say they experience is all about. What exactly are you experiencing I would think that resonance by definition of be a slight vibration or hum. It's like people are calling anything they can't explain resonance.

I agree... cuz resonance could be a good thing if it were a deep throaty drone ... except while ur cruising of course.

It sounds like two pieces of metal vibrating , getting the vibration faster or slower depending on what rpm ur at.

I have the new downpipe in, and the resonance is louder then the old downpipe, although it goes away after 5mins of driving. It's weird as hell, if i turn off the car or sit in a parking lot and then drive off the parking lot it comes back for another 5mins. In those 5mins though i feel like my car is a piece of shit! I thought i would never say this but I think im gonna start looking for some used comptechs. Seems like there the only ones that can make these headers without any shitty issues.

i went to home depot last night actually to buy some pipe wrap/insulation, but they didn't have anything big enough (2" ?) and nothing had a temperature rating on it. if i recall the headers would be around 200-300 degrees. anyone know if i'm right on that number?

i guess i will have to order something from a furnace company that can withstand the heat.
