haha no crap. If I were you I wouldn't have been such a jackass by cutting him off. btw the TL's 3rd gear is an overdrive gear. (not like it would have made a difference anyway, you would have still lost even if it were not)

Actually, I think it's 0-60 in 5.8 for the CI.

If it makes you feel better Jeffy, my friend just wrecked his 330i pushing a corner too hard.

i think you guys would match up pretty good against a auto 330i. my cousin has one, i raced him in the IS300. we were bumper to bumper from 0-90...and ran out of straight roads.

BMW is fast!!!!! They are engineered to go fast, very fast. TL on the other hand is designed to go "ok" fast and Very very comforable.

Nope !!! The TLs 3rd gear is NOT an overdrive gear....the TL will pull like a demon till the end of the 3rd gear, which would go on till about 100mph....

Also, Jeffy711 you sound pretty familiar from a few months back, when you were caught dissing the TL when all of us were pretty sure that you did not own a TL.....are you that person or did I mistake you for someone else ?!!!

I just did a search for posts from Jeffy711 and this is one of the instances that I found:
http://www.acura-tl.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002369.html

I found quite a few other topics started by him, all of which came across as posts from someone who know nothing about the TL, let alone owning one...

Around the time that "Jeffy711" first surfaced in this forum, another fellow "wyt66" also came up, with the exact same style of writing posts - all of them dissing the TL....we were pretty sure that both these persons were the same...

just my 2c

Question

If 3rd gear is overdrive in the 99TL, then what is 4th gear? Is it a second overdrive?

Yes the 3rd gear in the 99 is slightly overdriven (ratio a little less than 1.0)...the 4th gear is a highly overdriven one...

that wasnt a flame post. so quit getting all offended. as a moderator of a forum, you should think twice before posting such things. there are turbo'd ISs running 13 flat at only 5-6psi with messed up transmission. i havent seen a TL do that, so please save the flame for elsewhere.

I agree with you but I disagree that your IS can keep up with a Bimmer. Not trying to dis, but I've driven both 328 and 330 Ci and also driven IS300 and yet fairly close the Bimmer would still beat you, IMO. I tried to tell most of you that our TL's are not suited to go up against any German cars in the high end. Remember, the 528i (heavier than 328) will pull away from the TL easily after 80, period.

Not even close... Motor Trend reported a 5.8 with the 330, Road and Track did it in 6.2, and my local BMW dealer friends confirmed the 5.8 time with a GTech Pro... it's one fast machine...

I can't imagine what driving the new M3 is like?

the reason bmws are so quick to 60 is because of its gearing, it will hit around 65mph before having to shift to third gear, unlike most other cars in its class which are geared for third around 55mph or so.

so are you saying that BMW played with the final gear ratio and made the first 2 or maybe 3 gears faster? doesn't that mean the top speed will be sacrificed?

Yes, in a way. I am too lazy to look up and comfirm this now, but I think the 325/330 5 speed have no overdrive. At the highest gear, your engine is revving at 2400 rpm @ 60mph. The M3 however does have a over drive. I also believe that the IS300 will top out 2nd gear before 60mph. That's why the numbers you get on the magazine is kinda slow. The IS300 is not a slow car after all. It's no bimmer, and indeed a BMW wannabe. But still... Maybe the IS300 will do better with their manual tranny.

BMW gear ratios:

The manual 330 and 530 gear ratios are the same, while there is a slight difference in the 330/530 auto gear ratios. Here they are:

Gear--------Manual-----330Auto----530Auto
1st---------4.21--------3.67-------3.42
2nd---------2.49--------2.00-------2.22
3rd---------1.66--------1.41-------1.60
4th---------1.24--------1.00-------1.00
5th---------1.00--------0.74-------0.75
Reverse-----3.85--------4.10-------3.03
Final-------2.93--------3.46-------3.46

AS we can see, there is no over-drive gear for the BMW manual...

Also, the IS300 has the following gear ratios:

Gear------ratio
1st-------3.357
2nd-------2.180
3rd-------1.424
4th-------1.00
5th-------0.753
Final-------3.909

No prizes for guessing who the IS300 gear ratios are modelled on...
