Ghost living in my glove compartment?

Ghost living in my glove compartment?
I've had a very strange noise coming from the glove compartment of my 1999 3.2TL for a long time now. After lurking on this very informative site, I've decided to post my question in the hope that someone can shed some light on this "mystery".
The sound is especially noticeable during acceleration from a stop. Without a word of a lie, it sounds exactly like a small, rusty-hinged door slowly being opened! This creaking noise lasts for 2-3 seconds and ends with a distinct click, it almost sounds like an air piston deflating.
I've checked the actual glove door latch and it opens and closes properly, the sound is definitely not coming from the door mechanism. To the best of my hearing abilities, I've isolated it as coming form the glove box.
Please help exorcise my demons and help me get rid of the gremlins...

Have you tried starting out from a stop with it open to see if it still does it?

Could this possibly be the the air mixture control module that sits beneath the glove box toward the center of car (near ECU)? When it starts to wear out you will have it make strange noises as it try to adjust to the proper temperature.

Sounds like the servo for the air flow control doors in the HVAC.
Mine has been doing it for years. When I shut off the engine it sounds like an old Bullfrog croaking/groaning from under the glove box.
That and the fog horn of the evap system I got Dawsons' Creek!
