Exclamation Getting Tune-up today, Noob Needs Help!

im going to pepboys today to get an oil change, i havent gotten one in 7,000 miles since ive been getting ready for collage and stuff. but my car has beenperforming badly latly and in need of a tune up. i have a q. my freind said that if i get new spark plugs it can help my isues a bit since i dont think they have ever been replaced. also is there anything i should ask them to do that wont be to expesnive and will help keep my car runinng good. my dad never really tuned up the car unless there was somtin wrong with it, so im gonna change that.
oh one last thing, whats the best engine oil to use for perfomance?
*edit* i have about 200$ to work with and i wanna use a little as possible, but im willing to spend as much as i have to in order to get my baby running smooth!

well let's start by asking how many miles you have on your car. and also do you do your own mechanic work or do you always pay to get it done? when you say your "car has been performing badly" can you describe how exactly?

my car has 95,000 miles on it, and i just got the car from my dad about 2 months ago. but it has a brand new tranny and tires. the only thing that is wrng with it is.. well this is going to be hard to explain. there seems to be some kind of resistance when i am driving almost like i have the parking brake on very lightly but i dont, lol. its not really noticable unless you drive it as much as i do. it just seems to be slower than normal, and not as "in shape" so i figure taking it to get a tuneup and an oil change will help since it is long over due. as i said my dad never got anything done to the car unless it was absolutly nessiasry lol. and its not a drag im feeling more like a sluggish feeling. also the gas milage has been slipping a bit. but it was runing fine when i got it so i think its just from being used alot, as i put 3000 miles on it last month. lol. so i think its just wear and tear.

well for about $140-$150 you can replace the following yourself:
  • spark plugs (about $17 each, so ~$102. they're due at 100k miles so you could potentially be feeling the effects of bad plugs)
  • air filter (about $8 if you use a throw-away filter. always a good thing to change regularly)
  • fuel filter (not quite sure of cost but it can't be that much. can potentially reduce gas mileage and performance when it gets clogged)

once you do all this and get some fresh oil in there you should see a big difference. it also helps to use some fuel injector cleaner regularly. i wouldn't worry about your dad's maintenance practices either. unless the car breaks down there isn't much you would need to do to it other than changing the fluids and filters.

now you *should* get the tranny fluid changed about every 45k miles (not sure if your dad did this). this runs about $120 when you have acura do it so this would bump you over the $200 mark. this is something you should save up for though and get it done in the near future though if it's never been done. call honda, they might do it for cheaper, i dunno.

hope this helps.

Fuel filter does not need to be replaced. It is located in the fuel tank.

I know its not going to make any diffrence on how the car runs but the cabin air filter would be a good thing to change as well..

Not hard to do. Do them yourself for free.

What are you expecting from the plugs? I would run seafoam engine treatment thru the engine and clean it out, Clean the EGR ports, Also easy for you to do and a few DIYs on it here, then install the sparkplugs

Well it depends on if there is any thing wrong with what you have. But at that mileage its recomended. I noticed smoother ideling and acceleration when i changed mine at 115k

try running some B12 Chemtool through the gas tank. They got it for like 3 bucks a can at walmart. Add to a nearly emtpy tank. Usually helps as far as I have seen and can't beat the price. Also make sure you get the fuel cleaner they have carb cleaner that look like exactly the same bottle but is not the same stuff.

Car requires double platinum plugs, or best, plugs with Iridium center electrodes w/platinum pad on the ground electrode.

For Pep Boys, I doubt they'd sell the NGK/Denso plugs. Best they have is Autolite Double Platinums.

PartsAmerica/Kragen's can order for you, the NGK OE plugs for $10/each...and they can usually get 'em within a few days.

Plugs, throttle body/egr cleaning, air filter, and perhaps a can of injector cleaner in the gas tank would be what I'd do.

Yeah, I saw the fuel system cleaning special in the Sunday ad...which one did you get? They have several of 'em....the 3-step one does the throttle body as well...which could be why improvement has improved. How much did you pay?

don't worry about that. it's negligible. glad to hear it all worked out though.

B12 chemtool is some of the best stuff out there. you need to strip paint? B12! you need to degrease your manifolds? B12! you need to clean your fuel system? B12! great stuff.
