General question about body materials
General question about body materials
Howdy again!
Just had a quick question about different materials for auto body parts. I'm only just starting to research this, and while search engines are good, I wanted to get some more direct answers. When it comes to thinks like spoilers, lip kits... all that sort of jazz, what's the best material to use for reliability and durability? So far I know about fiberglass, urethane and ABS plastic.
I can't seem to find a source that really compares and contrasts the differences between 'em all, so any assistance in learning about the different materials, their properties, and even which costs more would be appreciated.
Thanks!

abs plastic is flexible when it get bumped against a curb or if someone leans on it on accident, fiberglass on teh other hand will most likely crack, as far as working with them, only worked with fiber glass on minor thing, lots of sanding is involved and u usually have to put bondo or some kind of filler after wards. also fiberglass really itches so take a cold shower once done working with fiber glass.
urethane and abs plastic has to be molded into the shape which requires a lot of the right tools and materials.

To be honest I got a brainstorm last night about the possibility of making body parts, but I have much to learn before that. I've already got a couple of friends on board with the idea and we're in the research phase right now.
Anyways... dont' want the discussion to go too far down those lines as I believe this forum has rules about such stuff...
It seems that fiberglass is the worst of the three from a reliability standpoint, but correct me if I'm wrong. Of ABS and urethane, is there really any major difference in strength, weight, cost... that sorta stuff?
Thanks agian
