Gauge problem???

When my car is cold and I go to start it up the temp gauge goes directly to the halfway point, then after the engine warms up it says its overheating. Any ideas before I send it to the shop?

(Thanks for ur response) really u think, because the gauge goes up to the halfway point when I turn the key to acc. before I even start the car, and could have been sitting over night.
