Gate shifting
Yes- that's normal. If you want to control that, you must gate shift. I really only gate shift in heavy traffic, because it saves wear and tear on the brakes.
4/50 on the brakes, 7/100 on the tranny - I'm gate shifting!

Yeah - I don't like the fact that you can't control the 1->2 shift in SS. But then again, under full throttle you burn through 1st gear in 2-3 seconds. Perhaps they thought that there was a possibility of engine/tranny damage due to overrevving. It's difficult to get the 1->2 shift correct while gateshifting (as it would be in SS).

when you use this method of shifting your auto trans you can keep the trans in whatever gear you desire until you decide to shift.

After getting used to it, I kind of like the fact that it shifts from 1st to 2nd for you. 1st gear is such a small gear anyway, doesn't seem like you can bring the rpm's up that much more. And its helpful when turning from a stop, you don't have to shift. I bought my TL after my girl bought her RSX, I thought there was something wrong with my car, but now I realize i like it better.
in the 2000+ TLs I know from above that it automatically shifts out of first into second and then the rest is manual. But can you shift down back to 1st gear?? in my '99 I'll downshift to 2nd going into the corner and then in to 1st coming out of the corner, my rpms will fly up to about 4500rpms when I downshift to 1st so I know I am no where near harming the engine from high rpms...
Is the lowest you(2000+ owners) can shift manually with out gateshifting 2nd gear??
If it is then I think a '99 could take a newer TL coming out of a turn simply because of the ability to downshift to 1st. If I'm wrong about the downshifting, and the newer ones can, then strike my "coming out of the corner" statement. But that downshift to 1st rockets me back into my seat and I'm practically stock.

Thanks again for the answer.
