Yes- that's normal. If you want to control that, you must gate shift. I really only gate shift in heavy traffic, because it saves wear and tear on the brakes.

4/50 on the brakes, 7/100 on the tranny - I'm gate shifting!

imo the auto 1 to 2 upshift when in ss is defeating the purpose of ss and forces you to gate shift. i am curious why the 03 tl-s does this when the 04 tl and rsx do not . suggestions?

Yeah - I don't like the fact that you can't control the 1->2 shift in SS. But then again, under full throttle you burn through 1st gear in 2-3 seconds. Perhaps they thought that there was a possibility of engine/tranny damage due to overrevving. It's difficult to get the 1->2 shift correct while gateshifting (as it would be in SS).

gate shifting=manually shifting your auto trans from 1st-2nd-3rd etc instead of using ss or just putting into d4 or d5.

when you use this method of shifting your auto trans you can keep the trans in whatever gear you desire until you decide to shift.

everytime I get a TSX or RSX for a loaner, I forget that my 1-2 doesn't shift on it's own and I forget to shift. I think i got used to the TL auto 1-2.

wonderboy, you don't really have much technical knowledge about cars, do you? It shows.

you can gate shift any auto trans not just acuras. imo the blown trannies are acuras fault. people have gate shifted since auto trannies have been around. and gate shifting is essentially the same as ss. the driver is choosing the trans gear they want. the only difference is the 1 to 2 shift in ss is done automatically on the sec gen tl.

Not in the '99! In the '99 there is no auto shift from 1 to 2 even in SS......

After getting used to it, I kind of like the fact that it shifts from 1st to 2nd for you. 1st gear is such a small gear anyway, doesn't seem like you can bring the rpm's up that much more. And its helpful when turning from a stop, you don't have to shift. I bought my TL after my girl bought her RSX, I thought there was something wrong with my car, but now I realize i like it better.

fla-tls. You think just like me. The tranny warranty is longer than the brake warranty. I won't own my car long enough to even see 100K.

in the 2000+ TLs I know from above that it automatically shifts out of first into second and then the rest is manual. But can you shift down back to 1st gear?? in my '99 I'll downshift to 2nd going into the corner and then in to 1st coming out of the corner, my rpms will fly up to about 4500rpms when I downshift to 1st so I know I am no where near harming the engine from high rpms...

Is the lowest you(2000+ owners) can shift manually with out gateshifting 2nd gear??

If it is then I think a '99 could take a newer TL coming out of a turn simply because of the ability to downshift to 1st. If I'm wrong about the downshifting, and the newer ones can, then strike my "coming out of the corner" statement. But that downshift to 1st rockets me back into my seat and I'm practically stock.

doesnt downshifting to slow down hurt the engine not the trans....whats slowing you down is the back presure from the engine...

in my 03 i can't downshift to 1st while in ss but the trans will drop to 1st automatically if i mash the gas while in 2nd and i'm in the 1st gear rpm range.

i think what your talking about is what's known as a jake brake on 18 wheeler transmissions (using the exhaust back pressure to slow the engine) but i may be wrong.

well however it works...im pretty sure al the stress is on the engine and not the trans

the stress would be on the engine and transmission if the downshift was done while at a high rpm but in ss on the 03 it's basically fool proof as the trans won't downshift if this was the situation. i was just trying to say in my last post that no cars that i know of use engine back pressure to slow down. when you down-shift you are selecting a different gear ratio that in turn slows the car down.

Thanks that was exacty what I was wondering. no sure who would win coming out of a corner then, I like the control of the first gear though, it can send you way passed 50km/hr (30m/hr), so it isn't that short of a gear (for the comment above).

Thanks again for the answer.

Exactly what I was trying to say earlier. I guess I'll have to get used to that process.
