Gas Mileage

I was just curious what kind of gas mileage everyone is getting. I have an 2001 TL and seem to be getting the worst gas mileage. I commute to school about 40 miles each way 4 days a week for a total of about 320. It is all highway driving and doesnt even come close to living up to the 29 mpg claimed on the sticker. I have had the car since it was brand new and always put premium unleaded gas in it. Right now I get about 17 mpg highway and if im lucky might be able to get 20 mpg. Have a lot of you out there had this problem? I have spoken to the dealership about it many times and I am told that everything is fine. Any suggestions or similar probs?

Most likely its the way you drive. If you keep the rpms below 3k, you will see big improvements

I drive ~340 miles a weeks, ~26 miles to work and back + misc, mostly highway at ~75-80MPH. I regularly use 93 octane.

I average 24 - 26 MPG; even better on long trips.

Assuming you're not on the obese side , you should get nearly the same mileage as me if you don't gun the accelerator at every light.
What do you inflate your tires to? Last time you checked the air filter? The last time you went for emissions testing how'd you do with Hydrocarbons?

what do you mean on the obese side? I happen to be a little overweight, and don't think that the extra 80 pounds that I may carry will affect my gas mileage. If it does, then I would say TL's are crap.

when we're talking about a mere 80-100 lbs, that shouldn't be the deciding factor b/w getting 28 MPG and getting 17MPG.

yah I'm not quite 1000 lbs, nor to I think anyone on this forum is. You'd have to be pretty damn huge to not be able to fit in the front seat of a second gen TL.

I think it's one of the roomiest vehicles in the front seats. The new TL on the otherhand has been designed a lot smaller....1 reason why I will never buy it.

plain and simple, it all comes down to driving habits. i tested myself out driving "normally" vs driving conservatively (but not quite granny-style) and i saw a big improvement in my fuel economy figures. just try to minimize on the hard accelerations, leave your foot off the pedal when you see a red or a pile of cars up ahead and don't brake hard cuz apparently that uses gas too.

my gas mileage all of the sudden sky rocketed after getting the fuel sending unit replaced (knock on wood). I've done 70km and the gauge hardly moved....maybe that's cause the new fuel sending unit is already faulty???

who knows

I was surprised at how much gas my car was using when
I first got it last August but then realized that I was playin
with the power, ease - off and it will get better.
Gas for me is .75 / litre You pay ta play.

I tend to keep my eyes opened and top up the tank if the gas is cheap. yesterday I filled up at Esso near my house for 63.5/litre and this morning I passed the same station selling gas for 69.5/litre. Whatever I have enough gas to take me into next week, so I'll fill up when it goes down next week.

don't forget though for me it's not 63.5 it's 73.5 cause you have to full up with Premium. Damn performance engines

whatever though, it's still worth it.

I am getting similar fuel economy too. It sucks.

I am getting 250 miles per tank. Once in a while 260-270.

Speed limits here are 70mph highway, 45mph most local streets. So on the highway I usually do 80mph.

My commute is 50-50 highway and local streets. I do drive aggressively, trying to get away from all the a-holes (can't hang near a-holes or they will do something stupid)

My best ever was 34.5mpg on a trip from Indy to Branson Missouri. Made 528 miles on one tank (15.3 gallons). My worst ever was 19.7 on a tank, but that was tearing around in town playing boy racer. I routinely average 28-32 on the highway and mid 20's overall.

With my driving style, about 14mpg in city driving situatiuns, 22mph on normal freeway usage (in LA that means: standing in traffic 24/7)..

Best i have gotten was 41.6mpg (!!!!) from LA to Vegas in 114 degree weather.. And if you're interested in the REAL shocker.. there were FOUR adults in the car and LUGGAGE for those four adults!!!

If you're going constant speed like on the freeway it doesn't matter how much weight you have in the car. It would matter in the city where you accelerate a lot, but once you reach constant speed weight has no effect. I was kind of surprised to see that the TL only has a 15 gal. tank. I was expecting more, like 18 or 19 for some reason...

sorry dude, no one is gonna believe you went 41.6 MPG on a TL, especially hauling all that weight. 31 I can believe, 41 probably means you have mistaken your corolla for your TL.

Interesting... my Cessna has a rebuild/converted Corolla engine in it (cheaper than getting a new engine).. trust me, that one gets a LOT worse milage.

But, in the end you're right, i guess my wife miscalculated somewhere.. we drove 300 or so miles, on 9 gallons.. that's 33.33mpg.

00 TL. I drove only in the city the last few tanks, only 13 mpg! Hence my tank, assuming 15 gallons, gives only 200 miles. With mixed 50/50 highway/city driving, I get about 20 mpg. I'm trying to figure out where the problem is also. I thought it might be my style of driving, but I also have a Camry. With the same style of driving, I get over 20+ mpg in the city. There is no way that with the same style of driving, that a V6 TL can chew up more than 7+ mpg compared to the Camry unless something is wrong.

Personal highway best: ~34 mpg. Usually get about 32 mpg all highway. Fully loaded with 4 passengers plus me, full trunk (and I mean full!), and AC on. In the winter, I get a little less, around 31 mpg highway, which to me doesnt make sense since the engine is breathing better because of the cold air. In the city, I always get around 23-24mpg. In a whole week in NYC, I averaged 24mpg in the city too. I know I love my 260 hp beast because it consumes as little gas as my 4-cyl accord.

Hello all:

That seem too low, have you tried the obvious:
1. Check air filter
2. Maintance tire pressure per manufacture spec
3. Spark Plug, and wire check
4. Wheel alignment
5. Drive slow (This is the hardest part !!!)

I hope this help

I drove from Houston to Baton Rouge & got 27-28 mpg w/ all hwy miles. This was going on avg 85-90 mph.

For those that are getting more than 30 mpg hwy, how fast are you going? ........ 60?

So what's with the huge variation? I would have expected close numbers with the lead-foot/non-lead-foot driver types.

Me? Definately non-lead-foot and only 18-21 mixed.

Remember people when your fuel light comes on you still have a bit over 3 gallons in your tank. As a general ruel I don't let the car get that low but sometime I do. I did let my 2000 TL get that low about a week ago. I drove from Washington DC. down to PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION in Southern Maryland. This is about 75 miles from DC. The fuel light came on before I got out of town. I drove at speeds of around 60 to 70mph most of the way. When I got there I still did a little running around before I got fuel. But when I filled up the car took about 15.5 gallons. so its still plenty in the tank if needed. I have only let the car get that low once before & it still took less than 16 gallons at fill up.
I would not do this in the city because the TL drinks more gas ofcourse. But like Dark DJ says 320-360 mile range is what I get when the fuel light comes on. The TL does have a 17.1 gallon fuel tank Most of us are not using the bottom of the fuel tank. The car could go about 90 to 100 miles after the fuel light comes on if highway driving. The FUEL ECONOMY for our cars is 19 city 29 highway. The actual mileage will vary but as the dealer window sticker says the majority get 16 & 22 mpg in the city & between 24 & 34 mpg on the highway.
