if you want to save gas, always shift up at the earliest moment. in 5th gear at around 40mph, I find that to be a very efficient speed, I can coast (without even touching the gas pedal) for a long distance and my car would barely slow down.

yea i agree.... but do not shift every gear at the lowest rpms.. because then u gotta press the gas pedal twice as hard to go faster which will increase the amoutn of rpms... shift at 2k every shift and at 40 mph shift from 4th to 5th.. you will coast along like "iforyou" had said. I do it ever day and it gets me alot better milage =).

May I suggest a reading of the owner manual to learn the opertion of the TL
https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...01_OMANUAL.asp
IMO-- 2000rpm is lugging the engine- what kind of mileage does that actually result in?
SS is not going to save gas over D5, the full auto-shift points are based on throttle position
D3 limits the trans to 1-2-3, why would you want to do that to save gas?
For better economy- check tire pressure- seafoam the intake and fuel tank-change the spark plugs if over 60k miles on them

hahahaha, funniest thread ever...come on man, unless you're a girl you should know move about cars than that.
i don't know if you will understand me but D3 means you would only go upto 3rd gear, therefore maintain higher rpm at higher speeds, therefore burn way more fuel.
if only there was no automatics people would be a lot knowledgeable.

I think the referance was to the 2nd and 3rd gear clutch packs getting hot,
and staying in those gears would logically cause more wear on them, thus promoting trans failure.
Allowing the computer to shift into the highest gear- lowest rpm for given wheelspeed, to manage the fuel mileage is prudent advice.
In Summary:
The pressure applied by your right foot, to the go faster pedal,
has a direct relation to the
~how far to next fillup guages'~
rate of decent

On my 02 tl-s at times, the storage area behind the coffee holder gets quite hot. But not only when it is at 2rd or 3rd gear. I could get hot at anytime: on freeway or local driving.

the built in heat and cool feature of the cup holder is coming from the plastic air duct running to the rear seats
Open the vents on it to allow the airflow out~
You can wrap pipe insulating tape around the duct if you want
Here is a free download of the owner manual- lots of tips in it
https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...01_OMANUAL.asp
For the trans 2nd 3rd gear, you feel slipping as it changes gears or if you stand on it, getting on the freeway for example- if a D5 light flashes on the dash- those are all indicators of trans prob
