Cool G35 & CL TypeS at the Track!

Here's a copy of a post from Fresh Alloy that I thought you might find interesting. These two guys apparently know each other but didn't go head to head. They did run at the same track on the same night though. The G35 is stock and CLS only has an AEM cold air intake. This seems to confirm for me what I have thought all along which is that the Type S & G35 are essentially equals when it comes to straight-line acceleration. Handling and braking however probably belong to the G35.

G35
85 degrees
VERY humid (storms passed thru earlier)

We only got two runs in:

1st run
R/T: .613
60': 2.393
330': 6.520
1/8: 9.876
MPH: 73.25
1000': 12.770
1/4: 15.207
MPH: 92.09

2nd run (caught me off guard)
R/T: 1.231 (yikes)
60': 2.445
330': 6.606
1/8: 9.969
MPH: 73.01
1000': 12.866
1/4: 15.301
MPH: 91.98

Overall not bad.

I can say the car was huge hit, I must have had 10 different people ask me all about it... EVEN A GUY FROM NISSAN!!!

CL Type S
I was there last night too. kbuicker does have a sweet car. Too bad we couldn't have run against each other. It was my first time to ever run at a track so I made a couple of mistakes, but here are my times...

My first one totally sucked cause I forgot to take of my VSA (like traction control) and my take off was horrible.

In this run I accidently hit the rev limiter while gate shifting into 2nd.

2nd run (gate shifting)
R/T: .962
60': 2.405
330': 6.529
1/8: 9.866
MPH: 74.05
1000': 12.756
1/4: 15.195
MPH: 92.73

3rd run (auto mode)
R/T: .890
60': 2.435
330': 6.559
1/8: 9.903
MPH: 73.54
1000': 12.810
1/4: 15.258
MPH: 92.26

Btw I have a 2002 Acura CL type-S. There was another CL out there with me and he beat me on my 2nd run, and his 4th run was 14.9xx. I know both the G35 and my CL will easily get into the 14s when it's not so hot and humid.

Heh, cool.

I was there also and I video taped the g35...I think he ran against a Focus, here is the clip
http://www.thefiresauce.com/vids/g35-focus.mpg

Here was my 14.9 all stock (unless you count coilovers)
I was racing against my co-worker's cobb spec WRX,
his best run was a 14.008, I think he ran a 14.2 here.
That all wheel drive kicks ass off the line.

It was 85 degrees outside, and hella humid. Storms had just passed through. If I had to guess, I'd say it was about 75%-80% humidity, it was a sweat box! Hell, even another CL-S that was out there with an AEM CAI didn't break into the 14s. No one was running good due to the heat and humidity.

I've run a 14.8 before, all stock, so I know what I'm capable of. It was just too damn warm. Hell with a CAI, I could probably hit 14.6-14.7 also.

do you still have the stock tires??

it would be quite sad a thing to see you tieing/beating a lighter car with same hp, more torque, and better tires not sad for you, but sad situation!!

What the hell are you talking about? I have an auto stock 2001, with no aftermarket speed mods, and I at least got into the 14s. I don't think the g35 did.

hey guys, take it easy!!
why can't we have friendly discussions??

here's an interesting thing in the july R&T issue
in the acceleration test, despite the TL being heavier, having less torque and the fact that it's a FWD with crappier tires and more drag and a not-so-close ration gear box, the TL-S pulls on the G35 in the 0-100mph test... how did that happen??

anyways, they're both good cars excelling in different categories, let's not flame, instead let's appreciate the nice cars in the market nowadays that are very affordable!

Why not compare apples with apples.

G35 > tls in every single performance category.

Stock G35 > Stock cls in every single performance category.

Oh just so you forget the cls will have to compete with the G35 Coupe . Yeah i know you fockers have an excuse that the G35 coupe hasn't come out yet. So it is not going to perform well, its only on paper. yadda yadda bing bing.

But the truth is we ALL know that the G35 coupe will tear the cls a new @sshole just as the G35 has done with the tls.

But wait isn't acura going to discontinue the hidious bathtub on wheels.

Boohaaaha.
I hate to have to resort to this but what a focking idiot!

Two great cars I'm just glad ours came out a little ahead!

I can vouch for Mantis's CLS. He's all original except for the coil overs, oh and the new tranny. :P He blew his 1st one.

All I can say is I'm not the least bit worried about the G35. After having seen the results and having driven one, my TLS will take 7 or more races out of 10. Probably 1o of of 10 is more like it. And my TLS is all original. :smokin:

The Q may be quick and luxurious but its so ugly. bottom line...G35=very ugly no matter how quick people cliam it is..itll still be ugly.

I don't think the G35 looks that bad. My sister just picked up a silver one last week. Its a fun car to drive around. I couldn't really push to hard, it had just stopped raining and the roads were slick. Plus, she only had 181 miles on it. I still like my CLS better though.

I test drove one today. Man, the car itself would be a killer if the styling was a bit different. I loved the engine and handling though!

I think that is why everyone wants the coupe I think it looks better in person than pictures. It's too bad its only available in auto.

What is wrong with these people?!

I know I am not the first one to say this, but here it is: what the hell is wrong with these people bashing one another? TL-S, CL-S, and G35 are all great cars. I am getting ready to lease in a couple of weeks, and these three cars are the only ones on my list (yes, both TL-S and CL-S are. I prefer the four-door variation, but I love driving a manual, so there's my dilemma).

The point is that I come here (to these forums) to learn. To read about other people's experiences and opinions, not emotions. I would love to read someone's review of TL-S or CL-S versus G35. What they liked better, and why. In terms of performance, comfort, utility, and styling. I would even prefer percieved performance, i.e. how someone felt driving one car versus the other instead of just numbers. We all know the numbers are too close to discuss for most people.

Well, that's my two cents, and I hope someone out there takes it to heart. Oh, and thanks to all the people who share their experiences and not their emotions.

Sincerely,
Deniska

Formerly an owner of a 1998 5-speed M3. With a one year old daughter I can no longer afford one, in terms of price, utility, and safety... Sigh...

I couldn't agree with you more. Sorry you had to give up the M3 as that's an awesome vehicle.

Everyone already knows bigpimpin is a little kid that can't read, and an idiot on top of that, who enjoys starting problems! Always opens his mouth, and sticks his foot in it. He is on a TL board talking trash about a TL, how smart is that, and then doesn’t even know what he is talking about?

All this coming from an infiniti/nissan fan that has had his share of Infinitis, and a TL-S owner, that happens to have a few real sports cars. You’re an embarrassment to other Infiniti owners.

I want to know what if any parts will be out for the G35? At Acura, we have Comptech, and a few bolt-ons has me at mid to low 14 sec times with stock tires still!

It not really about "fast" anyhow, none of these cars are fast, maybe quick, or greater then peppy at the most and just as many Acura owners thought or some secretly hoped, the G35 auto to auto, stock to stock is just on par with the TL-S though it has better numbers on "paper". It’s a matter of who gets off the line first. Not just at this independent track run, but street encounters, and all major magazines show the same thing, so bigpimpin should just get over the fact that a heavier, larger, more comfortable, less torque, FWD sedan can more than hold its own when the right foot gets put down against this “sports sedan”.

I believe initially this will be Nismo and/or R-SPEC but I'm not sure.

That was me in the G.. here is a portion of a response to another thread in acura-tl.com...

...As for the speed, I can attest, the G ran the 1/4 at 15.2 WITH ME DRIVING and that's not saying much. I ran a .613 R/T and finished at 92mph. I have to consider the temp and humidity that day, very hot and VERY humid.. and we drove the car there about 60 miles.. so the engine was still hot.. I heard that a CLs ran a 14.9 (not sure of his details, whether he had cooled off, running better tires etc, things you have to consider)... so VERY close in comparison not worth an arguement.

So beans for beans, it's up to you.. just wish everyone would quit downing each other and enjoy the fact that you can afford such a nice car no matter what brand it is...

Kev

That was me who ran the 14.9, and I'm also the one that taped your run against the focus.

I like both cars, my sister owns a g35, and I own a CL. I really like both cars, and they are quite comparable. I can attest to the heat / humidity out there, and it was hella humid.

As far as me, I am stock, with bald stock rubber on the front. And that's about it. I had 5 runs total, and right as it was time to leave, I had 3 runs, and I got the 14.9 on my last run.

I don't know why we let trolls ruin such a good time.

Any idea when you plan on heading back down to the track? It'd be fun to hook up. (I honestly don't plan on going again until it gets a bit cooler though.)

Deniska,

I haven't driven either car but from what I have read, you may feel better in the Infiniti coming from a rwd car. Also, the handling of the G35 has gotten unanimous praise. A few ticks to 60mph will hardly matter compared to that. BTW, there are few cars safer than BMW where it counts, structural integrity. I have a 2 year old daughter and bought my wife a BMW for that reason.

My wife had a '94 Maxima for six years and it was pretty much flawless in terms of maintenance and reliability. There is a G35 in our office building and the back seat seems quite large and it definitely seems to have a longer wheel base than the 3 series BMW. This perception that Nissans fall apart is not based on fact.

I find it funny that now Japanese car owners do exactly what they accuse BMW owner of doing, looking down their noses at other cars.

I will say this. Nissan designs the ugliest rearends and tailights this side of an AMC pacer. I will give Acura credit for not falling into that trap...yet.

so where are your facts coming from? the only fair comparison is found in the R&T July issue, where the TL-S outruns the G35 in 0-100mph, the initial time was slower simply due to the FWD car's cheap tires slipping

truth of facts........

then again, if you want to say that you meant the G35 is faster in a corner, well then you're absolutely correct, but you wouldn't want to lie now, do you? :p

But reaction time cannot be used to measure which car is faster.

Reaction time can measure the driver.

If a porshe is faster than a tls. then the porshe is faster than a tls.

You can't make a comparison such as if someone who drives the tls really well vs. someone who cannot drive a manual with a porshe. And come to the conclusion that the tls is faster than the porshe.

Yeah there will be instinces that a good driver with a tls will beat a poor driver with a G35. But car vs. car the G35 is a faster car than the tls.
It is obvioyus that SOME G35 people come here because they feel insecure about their rides. Bottom line is if you have nothing to contribute but bashing, you are insecure and experiencing what we call TLS envy.
